Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Onur Ege Öksüz from Istanbul, Turkey, has announced his verbal commitment to Arizona State University for the 2026-27 school year.

“I am thrilled to announce my commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Arizona State University! I would like to thank especially my family who helped me through this journey, and my coach @denizer8989 for her continuous support. I would also like to thank my head coach @_g.j.s.h_ , coach @burak_bzkrt , and my friends. Finally, I would like to thank coach @iapopa for offering me this amazing opportunity! Can’t wait to be a part of this incredible team!! Go Devils!!! 😈”

Oksuz, a member of the Turkish National Team, trains under Gjon Shyti at the ENKA Spor Kulübü. He specializes in IM, fly, and back and is the Turkish National Age Group record-holder for 16-17 boys in both the SCM 400 IM and LCM 400 IM. Recently, he broke the 18/19+ national mark in the LCM 400 IM with 4:19.92 at the European Junior Swimming Championships (Samorin, Slovakia), earning a bronze medal on the podium. Earlier this year he notched PBs in the 200 free (1:54.54), 400 free (3:58.15), and 200 back (2:03.40).

Last summer, at the 2024 European Aquatics Junior Championships, he competed in the 200 back (2:06.42, 29th in prelims), 200 IM (2:08.74, 37th in prelims), and 400 IM (bronze medal, PB of 4:21.65 in prelims).

Best LCM times (converted):

  • 400 IM – 4:19.92 (3:46.43)
  • 200 IM – 2:06.87 (1:49.12)
  • 200 back – 2:03.40 (1:44.81)
  • 200 fly – 2:02.12 (1:47.05)
  • 200 free – 1:54.54 (1:39.38)
  • 400 free – 3:58.15 (4:24.85)

The Sun Devils won their inaugural Big 12 Championships this past season, beating runner-up Arizona by over 600 points. Oksuz’s best times, converted, would have scored in the ‘A’ final of the 400 IM, the ‘B’ finals of the 200 back and 200 fly, and the ‘C’ final of the 500 free.

Other verbal commits to ASU for fall 2026 include Caleb Kattau, Dillon Albertyn, Henry Lyness, Jack Culberson, and London Rising.

A 2:03 200 LCM back does NOT convert to a 1:49 SCY. Closer to a 1:45 if you ask me

ASU has a long and successful history of converting European LCM swimmers into outstanding SCY swimmers! Two swimmers who had no SCY experience before being members of the ASU Sun Devil team are Leon Marchand and Hubert Kos!

A couple of example from ASU’s ‘long and successful history’ taking successful European LCM swimmers to successful SCY careers also, might include:

1. Polish breaststroker Beata Kaszuba who in 1995 became the first woman to ever break a minute in the SCY 100 Breaststroke, winning the NCAAs in :59.71;

2. Hungarian Olympic champion Atilla Czene who won the 200 IM in Atlanta and then came to ASU and won the 2000 NCAA title in the 200 IM in SCM;

3. Hungarian Olympic Champion and ISHOF Inductee Agnes Kovacs was also a SCY powerhouse winning multiple First-team All-American honors for 3 consecutive years, including in breaststrokes, IMs and in freestyle as part of ASU’s 4×200 relay. In 2015 she was inducted… Read more »

Did past and/or present ASU stars Kos, Marchand, McDonald, Sarkany, Hochwalt, Matheson, Schlicht, Martter, Hill, Reece Grady (current British national champion in 1500) or Dylan Gravely (2 event qualifier for USA Swimming in Open Water in Singapore this summer) concentrate on the “ASU events” you reference?
