EMU Men, Women Win Eastern Michigan Invite

Both the men and women of Eastern Michigan won their Eastern Michigan Invite this weekend. The women set 2 school records in the process. Check out their recap below for a play-by-play of the action.

Eastern Michigan:

Men-

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University’s men’s swimming and diving won its fourth consecutive title in the annual EMU Invitational, Dec.4-5, handily taking the victory by a margin of  almost 500 points.  The Eagles finished with 1,156.5 points, followed by Wayne State (761.5), Ball State (643), Ashland (558), Tiffin (138.5) and IUPUI (91).

Junior springboard phenom Alex Chan (Toronto, Ontario-Neil McNeil Secondary School) got the Eagles started on the right foot, posting a score of 361.95 in the 1-meter event to claim the top spot. Not far behind, freshman Tom Gillis (Halifax, Nova Scotia-Citadel) finished second, posting with the only other score over 300 in the field. Eastern’s springboard success carried over from a strong performance in the 3-meter event in which Chan took first place while sophomore Peter Rusenasfinished second.

Eastern followed up the strong showing on the springboard by claiming first and second in the 200 Medley Relay. JuniorCole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson) teamed up with seniors Chris Hodges (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson), Erik Gissen (Karlstad, Sweden-Alvkullegymnasiet) and Dylan Crompton (Redford, Mich.-Thurston) for a first place mark. Sophomore Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory) and juniors Kyle Aerne (Lake Villa, Ill.-Lakes), Kevin Moore (Phoenix, Ariz.-Boulder Creek), and Erik Brinkhoff (Bethel Park, Pa.-Bethel Park) slighted Wayne State’s top relay team to claim runner-up.

After freshman Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) and junior Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.-Home School) wrapped up first and third place finishes, respectively, in the 400 Individual Medley, sophomore Connor Johnson (Fort Bragg, N.C.-Terry Sanford) notched a win in the 100 Butterfl after touching in with a season-best time of 49.89, Johnson was followed by Wayne State’s Rasmus Olsen and EMU teammate Gissen.

Senior Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) made a splash in his first event of the day, taking the field by storm in the 200 Freestyle. The senior captain’s time of 1:38.49 was nearly four seconds faster than the second place finisher.

Following their captain’s lead, Hodges and Aerne added 37 points to the Eagles’ total. Hodges claimed the top spot with a time of 56.07 while Aerne finished in second, touching in a half a second after his teammate.

Bateman and Gissen finished second and third, respectively, in the 100 Backstroke before the Eagles closed out the first half of the day in the 800 Free Relay. An equal mix of veterans and youth turned out to be the right combination for the Eagles as freshmen Jake Tyson (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Northgate) and Kawaguchi teamed up with seniors Krzysztof Gilski (Dywity, Poland-Adam Mickiewicz State Secondary) and Henry for the victory. Sophomores Burton and Hunter Cook (Hilliard, Ohio-Hillard Darby) joined freshman Ricky Perez and Lichtenberg as the Eagles other top relay squad. Shaving nearly 20 seconds from their preliminary time, the foursome posted a time of 6:46.65.

Heading into the final session, the Eagles had distanced themselves pretty well. Sitting in first with 793 points, the Green and White were trailed by Wayne State (492) and Ball State (442).

EMU opened the last portion of the invite right where they left off, turning in first and second place performances in the 200 Free Relay. Tyson, Gissen, Crompton, and Henry won the event with a time of 1:22.22 while Johnson, Burton, Bateman, and Brinkhoff placed second.

The Green and White went on to sweep the top three slots in the 500 Free and Henry registered his seventh win of the weekend. Rzyski and Lichtenberg rounded out the top three with times of 4:35.93 and 4:37.91, respectively.

Eastern received top-notch performances from a pair of freshman in the 200 IM, adding a combined 37 points to the Eagles’ total. Tyson earned the victory, touching in in 1:52.49 while Kawaguchi taking second.

After Gissen reeled in his first win of the season in the 50 Free, the Eagles closed out the competition with a one-two finish in the 400 Medley Relay. Touching in in first place, Bateman, Hodges, Tyson, and Henry turned in a pool-record of 3:16.42.

Eastern will take nearly a month’s break before jumping into the pool for its next competition.

Women-

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team built upon a day one lead to win the EMU Invitational with a total of 1,230 points Saturday, Dec. 5. An all-around effort and two pool records fueled the Eagles to a successful day and the invite victory for the second consecutive year.

Eastern’s sophomore diving crew opened day two with an impressive showing, claiming two of the top three spots. Becky Deacon (Sherwood Park, Alberta-Vimy Ridge) led the way with a score of 287.60 while Alli Shereda‘s (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser)score of 282.90 ranked third.

Turning to the swimming events, the Eagles achieved the coveted one-two punch in the 200 Medley Relay. Freshmen Erika Guenther, Delaney Duncan, and Stephanie Johnston combined with junior Carly Jackson (La Porte, Ind.-La Porte) shaved three and a half seconds off their preliminary time on their way to posting not only a season-best time but also pool and meet record. The Eagles’ time of 1:42.39 bested the meet record set, Dec. 4, 2010, and edged out the pool record (1:42.78) set in 2005 by nearly four tenths of a second. Not far behind the first place foursome, juniors Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa-Moon Area) and Genna Worthley (Portland, Maine-Deering) teammed up with freshman Dora Vrcic and senior Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day). Placing second in the event, the Eagles’ relay squad touched in eight hundreths of a second faster than the previous meet record with a time of 1:43.42.

Following a second place showing by junior Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) in the 400 Individual Medley, the Green and White returned to the top of the podium courtesy of Jackson. The La Porte, Ind. product finished the 100 Buttefly in 56.08 while Vrcic placed third.

Senior Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) kept the Eagles on track, riding an early lead in the 200 Freestyle to her third victory of the season with a time of 1:52.19. Junior Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville) passed up Ashland’s Kaylyn Murphy on the second split and never looked back on the her way to a runner-up finish.

In her first return to the pool since setting the pool and meet records in the 200 Medley Relay, Duncan posted her second win of the season. Touching in in 1:03.78, Duncan edged out Wayne State’s Hannah Loesch while Worthley added 16 points to the Eagles’ total with a third place finish.

A win by Mitcheltree in the 100 Backstroke gave the Eagles their fourth win in as many events. Finishing with a time of 55.54, Mitcheltree led the field by more than two seconds. With Mitchteltree in the lead, Guenther fought for a third place finish.

The Green and White closed out session one by competing in the 800 Free Relay for the first time this season. The relay squad made up of Van Allen, freshman Emilie Desnoyers, Detro, and Wagner led from the get-go, ultimately winning the event with a meet-best time of 7:28.99. Eastern also claimed second place in the event as freshmen Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) and Rebecca Winnert (Buffalo, N.Y.-Williamsville), Jackson, and sophomore Rosalie Yockey (DeWitt, Mich.-DeWitt) finished second.

Midway through day two, the Eagles had totaled 775 points. Wayne State lingered closely however, standing in second with 654 points.

Session two kicked off with the 200 Free Relay, an event the Eagles have had success in all season. MacLean, Johnston, Mitcheltree, and Wagner combined for a first place finish while Desnoyers, Detro, Duncan, and Vrcic finished just behind them in second place.

Van Allen returned to the pool in session two for the 500 Free. Posting the only sub-five-minute time, the Indianapolis, Ind. native bested the field. Jackson rounded out the top three, finishing third just behin Wayne State’s Morgan Kollen.

In the 200 IM the Eagles claimed the top two spots. Guenter built off an early lead to turn in a first place finish while Daniel placed second.

Eastern Michigan turned in its lone sweep of the day in the 50 Free as Wagner, Johnston, and MacLean finished first through third, respectively.

Turning back to the relay events, the Eagles top squad broke the previous pool record, touching in in 3:44.43. The first place team was made up of Mitcheltree, Duncan, Jackson, and Van Allen while MacLean, Worthley, Vrcic, and Detro finished runner-up in the last event of the invite.

EMU’s impressive weekend earned them the victory at the invite with a total of 1,230 points while Wayne State ranked second with 939.

The EMU Invite closed the book on the 2015 portion of the Eagles slate as the Green and White do not return to competition until Jan. 22, 2016, when the Eagles battle Wayne State in dual action.

IUPUI:

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Junior Melissa Berger headlined IUPUI’s diving efforts at the Eastern Michigan Invitational over the weekend, finishing second off both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Freshmen Mitch Mastey and Krisztian Somhegyi both fared well on the men’s side.

Berger opened with a second-place effort off the 1-meter board on Friday night (Dec. 4), posting a season-best six-dive score of 256.05. She was just more than six points behind the winner in her best effort of the season. Classmate Bailey Wills was ninth overall at 216.70. The men were led by Mastey off the 3-meter board as the rookie posted a season-best score of 305.30 in a third-place effort. Somhegyi was fifth at 283.40 and Austin Youngwas ninth at 155.55.

On Saturday (Dec. 5), Berger continued to lead the way, notching a season-best score of 272.75 off the 1-meter board, finishing second by less than three points. Wills was tenth overall at 223.35.

Somhegyi, a three-time Summit League Diver of the Week this season, just missed his 1-meter top score by closing the meet at 292.10 in a third-place finish. Erik Romer was sixth at 245.55 and Mastey was seventh at 216.95. Young rounded out the men’s entries with a score of 200.75.

This weekend’s meet served as a tune-up for Somhegyi, who will participate in the USA Diving Winter Nationals at the IUPUI Natatorium on Dec. 15-20. The remainder of the IUPUI divers won’t be back in competition until the Jaguars host Ball State and Xavier in dual meet action on Jan. 8.

Ball State:

Men-

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Ball State men’s swimming and diving team completed the annual Eastern Michigan Invitational on Saturday evening with a team score of 643 points, which placed them third overall.

The day kicked off with the 200 medley relay, in which Logan Kisinger, Zach Reichle,Tanner Barton and Cole Smith finished fourth with a time of 1:35.23. The mark earned 29 points for the Cardinals for a solid start to the full day of action.

The race was followed up by the 400 IM, in which junior Jacob Eckert was the top finisher for Ball State after he touched the wall in 4:16.90 for a sixth place overall finish.

Fellow junior Bradley Ridge was the top Ball State finisher in the 100 butterfly, in which he posted a 50.75 finals time, substantially quicker than his 53.28 seeded time.

The event was followed up by the 200 freestyle where junior Andrew Carlson touched the wall first for the Cardinals for a fifth place finish. Carlson marked a 1:44.34 final in the race.

In addition to his relay success, Reichle earned a fourth place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a 58.36 time. Reichle’s seed had him pegged for a 1:01.73 time. Reichle’s relay partner Kisinger earned an eighth place individual finish as well in the next event, the 100 backstroke, with a 53.63 final.

The morning session was closed out with the 800 free relay, in which Banistre Lienhart, Barton, Middleton and Carlson earned a fifth place finish in 7:09.51. The evening action picked up with the 200 free relay, where Kisinger, Reichle Austin Green and Smith opened with a 1:25.78 time for fifth.

Freshman Alex Nickoli was the top finisher for the Cardinals in the first individual event of the evening, the 500 freestyle. Nickoli touched the wall in 4:48.45, drastically quicker than the 5:02.21 seeded time for the freshman.

In the 200 IM, Eckert marked another individual top place for the Cardinals when he posted a 2:00.73 final for 10th. The race was followed up by the 50 free, in which Smith earned a fourth place finish in a solid 21.31 time.

In diving action, freshmen Lane Sawyer and Gabe Dean competed in three-meter action on Friday afternoon, while they took on the three-meter event on Saturday afternoon. Sawyer marked scores of 173.05 in one-meter action, as well as 181.05 on the three-meter. Dean earned scores of 179.00 and 154.60 in one- and three-meter competition, respectively.

The two-day event was closed out with the 400 medley relay, where Kisinger, Reichle, Ridge and Smith earned a 3:30.87 final for fifth.

Eastern Michigan took the Invitational title with 1252 points, while Wayne State followed in second with 761.5 points. Ashland’s team followed Ball State in fourth with 558 points, while Tiffin University fell in fifth with 138.5 points, while IUPUI rounded out the competition with 91 points.

The Ball State men’s swimming and diving squad will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 8 when they travel down to Indianapolis, Ind. to participate in co-ed competition with IUPUI and Xavier.

Women-

OXFORD, Ohio – The Ball State women’s swimming and diving team completed the third day of split squad competition at the Miami Invitational and the Eastern Michigan Invitational. The swimmers finished fifth overall in Oxford, Ohio with 891.5 points, while the divers excelled in Ypsilanti, Mich. with the Ball State men’s swimming and diving program.

To kick off the third day of action in the Corwin Nixon Natatorium, sophomores Morgan Brebberman and Jenna Zitkus flew in the 200 backstroke with times of 2:10.51 and 2:12.02, respectively. Other Ball State participants in the race included Allie Kolz (2:07.19), Mikayla Dostall (2:07.97), Audrey Mayer (2:08.80), Andrea Richter (2:09.48), Kimberly Scott(2:10.32) and Taylor Miles (2:16.58).

Junior Jessica Extine was then the lone Cardinal to take on the finals of the 100 freestyle, and posted a time of 53.68. The event was followed up by the 200 breaststroke, in which seniorSydney Harris marked a 2:25.16 time for 14th. Harris was narrowly trailed by sophomore Kaiti Sullivan who posted a 2:27.42, and freshman Liz Madison who touched the wall at 2:28.74. Sophomore Amanda Kedzierski (2:28.80) and freshmen Mason Dahman (2:29.67) andMeaghan Mahoney (2:35.78) also took on the race.

Sophomore Traci Muszalski marked Ball State’s highest finish of the day when she touched the wall at 2:06.03 in the 200 butterfly for 10th. Fellow Cardinals in the event were sophomoreHannah Cressman, who earned a 2:07.86 final, junior Katie Horn, who posted a 2:09.61 time, and freshman Maryn Meldrum, who finished in 2:09.11.

To round out the Miami Invitational, the Cardinals swim squad competed in the 400 freestyle relay with times of 3:32.95 for the A relay, and 3:38.00 for the B relay. The A finishers included Kedzierski, freshman Lauren Elston, Madison, and Extine, of which shaved off three whole seconds from its seed time, while the B finishers Mayer, Richter, Scott and Muszalski took off two seconds from its respective seed time.

In diving action at the Eastern Michigan Invitational, junior Quinn Bixler finished third overall in one-meter action with a score of 236.50. Senior Madie Zirzow earned a 226.60 mark on the one-meter board, while she placed high for the Cardinals in one-meter action with a score of 233.95. Taylor Fiew sat closely behind Zirzow after the three-meter with a mark of 233.40, while she earned a 225.30 on Friday in one-meter competition. Brittany Penn was the final Ball State women’s diver to fly into the pool, and earned scores of 205.75 and 215.10 on the one- and three-meter boards, respectively.

The Ball State women’s swimming and diving team will be back in action after the holidays when they participate in a co-ed meet with IUPUI and Xavier on Friday, Jan. 8 in Indianapolis, Ind.

Ashland:

The Ashland University swimming teams were back in the water on Saturday (Dec. 5) for the second and final day of the Eastern Michigan Invitational in Ypsilanti, Mich.

The Eagle men placed fourth in a six-team field with 558 points. The women ended in third place with 646 points. Eastern Michigan won on both the men’s (1,252) and women’s (1,230) sides of the scoreboard.

Senior Hannah Mattar set a blistering pace of 4:26.32 in the 400-yard individual medley, capturing gold. She also won the 200 breaststroke on Friday (Dec. 4) with a time of 2:16.70.

Fellow Eagle senior Kaylyn Murphy took bronze in the 200 free, clocking in at 1:53.32. She also finished fourth in the 50 free (23.92).

Sophomore Christopher Georgiadis finished second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:06.71. Sophomore Ryan Deemertook home third place in the 200 free, touching in 1:42.88. Deemer also placed third in the 200 free (1:42.88).

Eagle junior Megan Schultz recorded a fourth-place finish in the 200 IM. She timed in at 2:11.11. Senior Sergio Sanchis Peris notched a second-place finish in the 50 free, finding the wall in 21.27 seconds.

The Eagles will return to action on Jan. 9 at home against Malone and Urbana at Messerly Natatorium.

Wayne State:

YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Wayne State University men’s swimming and diving squad placed second at the Eastern Michigan Invitational with 492 points on Saturday afternoon.  The Warriors notched six top-three finishes in the final day of competition.

RELAY RESULTS
– Junior Juan David Molina Perez (Medellin, Columbia), senior Jayson Hansen (Grand Blanc, Mich.), freshmanRasmus Olsen (Kastrup, Denmark) and junior Josh Schacht (Schoolcraft, Mich. / Mattawan) placed third in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:31.76.
– Sophomore Tyler Roshak (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Harrison), Olsen, Hansen and freshman Ahmed Ahmed(Alexandria, Egypt) finished third in the 800 freestyle relay in 7:05.99.

INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
– Molina Perez won the 100 backstroke in 49.23, while freshman Dymtro Drobnych (xxx) placed fourth with a mark of 50.99.
– Olsen recorded a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly (50.01), and junior Mitch Bohr (Novi, Mich. / Walled Lake Western) placed fourth with a mark of 50.38.
– Ahmed earned second place in 200 freestyle with a time of 1:42.15.
– Hansen posted a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 57.40, while senior Aryell Pasternak(Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren De La Salle) finished ninth (59.98).
– Freshman Blake Wheeler (Holland, Mich. / West Ottawa) finished seventh in the 400 IM with a time of 4:21.17, while senior Kris Hector (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) placed eighth in 4:24.92.

– WSU will take a little more than a month off before hosting GLIAC opponent Grand Valley State on Jan. 9 at 1:00 p.m.

Women-

YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Wayne State University women’s swimming and diving squad finished the Eastern Michigan Invitational in second place with 654 points on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors a total of six NCAA “B” standard time throughout the two-day tournament.

RELAY RESULTS
– Seniors Elly Maleski (Cedar, Mich. / Traverse City West) and Hannah Loesch (Pensacola, Fla.), freshman Delayni Kornak-Kotarba (Comstock Park, Mich. / Rockford) and sophomore Makayla Myers (Hudsonville, Mich.) set a NCAA “B” standard after placing third in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.57.
– The quartet in freshman Emily Marginean (Tecumseh, Ont.), sophomore Skyler Muzichuk (Clinton Twp., Mich. / International Academy of Macomb), junior Emily Heitchue (Royal Oak, Mich.) and freshman Ellie Dean (Midland, Mich. / Dow) posted a NCAA “B” standard after finishing third in the 800 freestyle relay with a mark of 7:45.05.

INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
– Loesch earned her second NCAA “B” standard time of the weekend after finished second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.91, Heitchue placed fifth in 1:06.34.
– Maleski took second place in the 100 backstroke with a mark of 57.57, and junior Brenna Gabrielson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) finished fourth (57.79).
– Freshmen Tai Furnari (Pleasant Ridge, Mich. / Ferndale) and Hannah Berich (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) finished third and fourth in the 400 IM with times of 4:36.03 and 4:37.01, respectively.
– Myers recorded a fourth-place finish in the 100 butterfly with a mark of 58.64, while Kornak-Kotarba placed fifth (58.78).
– Sophomore Meghan Lamb (East China, Mich. / St. Clair) finished the 200 freestyle in fourth place with a time of 1:53.88 and freshman Morgan Kollen (Zeeland, Mich. / West) placed fifth (1:55.15).

Tiffin:

Tiffin University’s swimming and diving teams competed at the Eastern Michigan Invitational, with the women finishing 4th of 6 teams while the men were 5th.

For the women, Eastern Michigan won with 1230 points followed by Wayne State with 939 and Ashland with 646. Tiffin had 231 points.

Leading the way for Tiffin was Anastasiia Kvitchenko, who won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:03.99, while also taking 2nd in the 100 butterfly in 56.59.

The 200 medley relay team also finished for 6th for the women.

For the men, Eastern Michigan won with 1252 points followed by the Warriors with 761.5. Tiffin finished with 138.5 points.

The highest finisher for the men was Pedro Van Isschot, who was 6th in the 200 freestyle.
