MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee women’s swimming & diving team extends their winning streak at home to 16 after holding off Cleveland State on Friday, Oct. 25, at the Klotsche Natatorium in Milwaukee, Wis. The Panthers outscored the Vikings 165.5 – 132.5 in the first-ever dual between the two teams.
Milwaukee claimed 10 events on the night, including both relays.
The young Panther squad of Molly Meland, Andrea Bellart, Hannah Pozezinski, and Kelen McDaniels grabbed the win in the first event of the day in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:48.49 while McDaniels, Cassandra Hutchins, Meegan Snyman, and Natalie Hey ended the day with another Panther win in the 200 free relay (1:38.96).
Additionally, three different Panther freshmen each grabbed a pair of wins.
Meland, continuing her strong start to her collegiate career, had two big wins in both her individual events in the 100 back (58.69) and 100 fly (57.80).
Bri Zablocki also had herself a night after claiming first in both the 200 fly (2:09.79) and the 200 IM (2:10.73).
The Panther diving standout McKenzie Sanchez did was she does best by leading the field in both the one-meter and the three-meter. Sanchez first threw down a top score of 282.83 on the three-meter. This score now puts her at number seven on the Panther top-10 list. The freshman then ended the competition with a win on the one-meter with a score of 268.13.
Sophomore Giulia Guerra-Montes and McDaniels each claimed a win in an individual event to round out the Milwaukee 10 wins.
Guerra-Montes led the field in the 200 back after touching the wall just ahead of Cleveland State with a time of 2:06.03.
McDaniels was a key member of both winning relays while also grabbing a win for herself in the 50 free (24.90).
In addition to McDaniels winning the 50 free, Hutchins and Snyman placed second and third for the Panthers, with a time of 24.99 and 25.33 respectively.
Guerra-Montes had an exciting race after coming from behind late to tie for second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:12.31.
The Panthers had many top-3 finishes to help Milwaukee claim the win.

The Panthers will take a week off before heading to the state of Illinois for a pair of dual meets. Milwaukee will first take on Wheaton on Friday, Nov. 8 at 4:30 p.m. in Wheaton, Ill. followed by UIC on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 11 a.m. in Chicago, Ill.

The Milwaukee men’s swimming & diving team had a strong night at home against league foe Cleveland State on Friday, Oct. 25, at the Klotsche Natatorium in Milwaukee, Wis. The Panthers took home four wins, including the 200 free relay to end the night, but the Vikings would top MKE 171-129.
Sophomore Mason Schoof grabbed the first win for the Panthers in the 200 free (1:45.35) while teammate Jonathan Kollen claimed second place (1:45.59).
Senior Patrick Kelley led the field in the 200 fly to win with a time of 1:52.50. Jacob Weber came back to take third touching the wall in 1:59.17.
At nearby Schroeder, Jared Kleczka won the three-meter with the top score of 297.15.
To end the night, the Panther’s 200 free relay of Jasper Appleton, John Ruan, Ryan Hakes, and Bailey Bodart threw down a great race to out touch Cleveland State for the win (1:25.65).
The Panthers also had many more top-3 finishes.
The 200 medley relay of Ben Huynh, Jacob Fase, Kelley, and Bodart finished second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:34.85.
Jack Garcia swam his way to a second-place finish in the 1000 free, just breaking the 10 minute mark (9:59.20).
After a big underwater push, Huyhn finished second in the 100 back in a very close race (52.25) while teammate Tyler Wrasman finished right behind in third (54.18).
Jacob Fase led the Panthers all night in the breaststroke after taking third in both the 100 breast (58.81) and 200 breast (2:10.55).
Bodart had a big night in the sprints, leading the Panthers in the 50 free (21.72) for third place and the 100 free (47.49) for second place.
Schoof and Huynh finished second and third in the 200 back with a time of 1:54.71 and 1:55.72 respectively.
The distance crew of Garcia (4:50.86) and Isaac Jiardini (4:51.23) also claimed second and third in the 500 free.
In addition to Kelley’s 200 fly win, the senior had more top finishes after placing second in the 100 fly (51.05) and third in the 200 IM (1:57.74).
After taking first on the three-meter, Kleczka claimed second on the one-meter with a score of 293.10 while Spencer Peronto finished third with a score of 251.85.

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Cleveland State University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams contested their first duals of the 2019-20 season Friday evening against fellow Horizon League foe Milwaukee.
The CSU men came away with a 171-129 victory while the Viking women dropped a 165.5-132.5 decision. The win by the Viking men marks the first collegiate dual win for first-year head coach Hannah Burandt.
“We have a tradition of ‘shout-outs’ at the end of the week and after a meet, and today every single person had something to ‘shout-out’ about,” Burandt said. “Coming off a long bus ride and racing in an eight-lane pool with no space to warm down, we raced and dove with hearts and guts. There is a lot to be proud about and a lot to be hopeful for tomorrow.”
Sophomore Jack Krusinski went a perfect 4-for-4 Friday as he won all three individual events entered and also swam on a winning relay.
Krusinski began his day by swimming the second leg of the opening event—the 200 medley relay. Junior Dominik Niedzialek led off while seniors Dominic Poletta and Jack MacDonald swam the back half as the quartet won in 1:33.97.
Krusinski then proceeded to win both breaststroke events, edging out senior Tyler Stevenson in both races. The sophomore won the 100 in 57.33 seconds while the senior was second in 58.17. In the 200 breast, Krusinski took first in 2:07.02 while Stevenson was second in 2:10.16.
Krusinski finished his day by winning the 200 IM in 1:54.91. In this race, it was junior Timothy Kubacki who took home second-place with his effort of 1:56.30.
Kubacki had also been vying for his third first-place finish of the night in the 200 IM. He had swept the backstroke events, winning the 100 in 52.08 seconds and finishing first in the 200 in 1:51.73, nearly three full seconds ahead of the runner-up.
Niedzialek swept the distance freestyle events Friday. He won the 1000 free in 9:37.30, finishing more than 21 seconds ahead of the field. Niedzialek then touched the wall first in the 500 free in 4:39.78, more than 11 seconds ahead of the field.
Junior Matt Akers, MacDonald, senior Matthew Martin and Poletta also won individual events Friday.
MacDonald won the 50 free (21.54), as classmate DJ Arlsanian was second (21.61), while Poletta won the 100 free (47.11). Martin won the 100 fly in 50.94 seconds and took second in the 200 fly in 1:56.12.
Akers won the 1-meter diving with 298.95 points, finishing just shy of posting an NCAA qualifying score. Junior Trevor Mahoney was CSU’s top finisher in 3-meter diving, placing second with 282.30 points.
On the women’s side, junior Lexie Kostelnik led the way by sweeping the distance freestyle events.
Kostelnik won the 1000 free in 10:32.85, finishing fewer than two seconds ahead of freshman Rachel Contich (10:34.63). She then won the 500 free in 5:14.06.
Four other Viking women won individual events against the Panthers.
Junior Irena Weclawiak won the 100 freestyle in 54.18 seconds after she was CSU’s top finisher in the 50 free (25.42).
In the 200 free, Weclawiak took runner-up honors (1:56.79), finishing second to teammate Gabriella Marinelli (1:56.72).
A pair of Vikings teamed up to sweep the breaststroke events.
Junior Alana Cartwright won the 100 breast in 1:06.65 while classmate Libby Smith won the 200 in 2:27.55.
Senior Madi Jaszcz was CSU’s top finisher in a pair of events. She was the runner-up in a field of 13 in the 100 backstroke, finishing in 59.92 seconds. Jaszcz was third in the 100 fly in 59.35 seconds.
Junior Sule van der Merwe was the runner-up in the 200 backstroke (2:06.03) while sophomore Agnes Bahr took second in the 200 IM (2:12.31).
Freshman Emma Kerro notched a pair of runner-up showings in her first collegiate competition. She scored 241.80 points in the 1-meter and 244.95 points in the 3-meter.
Senior Chuchu Yang, Smith, junior Shaw Barney and Marinelli took second in the 200 medley relay in 1:49.23. In the 200 free relay, Marinelli led off and was followed by Weclawiak, Barney and Jaszcz as the group finished in 1:39.80.
Cleveland State will be right back in action Saturday afternoon as it closes the weekend with another league dual at Green Bay.
