CCSU Women Top Binghamton, Bearcat Men Down NJIT

The Central Connecticut State swimming and diving team defeated Binghamton on Saturday, 156-144. The meet was held at NJIT in Newark, NJ.

Senior diver Jewelle Maziarz posted an NCAA Zone Diving qualifying score on the 1-meter, board. She won the event with a score of 267.53 points. It is the second time in her tallied a zone qualifying score.

The Blue Devils 400-freestyle relay posted the 88th fastest time amongst mid-major programs this season.

The Blue Devils are back in action on Friday night when they host Friday Night Sprints. The meet will begin at Suydam Natatorium at 5:00 pm.

RELAYS

DIVING

  • Kaitlyn Carroll was the team’s top scorer on the 3-meter board, tallying 250.13 points
  • Maziarz was third on the high board, scoring 245.85 points

FREESTYLE

  • Maggie Rutledge and Izzy Vega took the top two spots in the 1,000 freestyle, with Rutledge winning at 10:34.36 and Vega touched at 10:52.00
  • Dunningan (1:56.21) and Gabby Spaciano (1:57.55) followed that with a 1-2 placing in the 200-freestyle, with Grace M. Young in fourth at 1:59.77
  • Grace M. Young as the top finisher in the 50-freestyle, clocking 24.48, with O’Leary touching third at 24.76
  • The Blue Devils touched second and third in the 100-freestyle, with Spaciano going 54.77 and Grace M. Young at 54.98
  • Rutledge picked up her second win of the day with a 5:12.45 effort in the 500-freestyle, as she led a 1-2-3 sweep with Spaciano (5:18.26) second and Vega third in 5:21.85

STROKES

  • Milhomens took third in the 100-backstroke, with a swim of 58.66, with Kenney close behind at 59.02, as the top four finishers finished within 0.91 seconds
  • Grace Young swam to a third-place finish in the 100-breaststroke, touching at 1:09.41
  • Milhomens won the 200-fly for the Blue Devils, fending off a charging foe to win in 2:10.89
  • Milhomens won again in the 200-backstroke, at 2:06.25, with Fusco in second in a time of 2:08.08
  • Grace Young captured third place in the 200-breaststroke, with a swim of 2:30.08
  • Dunningan took the second spot in the 100-butterfly with a swim of 58.76, .14 seconds shy of the win and Cowing touched fourth at 59.87
  • Kenney took the top spot in the 200 IM, coming from behind, to win with 2:09.28, while Gabi Wroblewski was fourth at 2:13.54

NEWARK, N.J. – Sophomore Evan Peters, senior Maria Pignatelli and freshman Julia Iwanow each won a pair of individual events, highlighting Binghamton’s performance in a swimming & diving tri meet at NJIT on Saturday afternoon. The Bearcat men defeated the host Highlanders 176.50-123.50 while the women lost a close 156-144 decision to Central Connecticut State University (CCSU).

“Both teams swam well today,” head coach Jerry Cummiskey said. “Our men got several close wins early that set the tone for the day while the women’s lead went back and fourth during the meet and came down to the final relay. We had good performances on both sides.”

Peters swept the men’s 200 free (1:38.85) and 500 free (4:31.55) and was also part of the first-place 400 medley relay team (3:20.99). Also on that winning relay were freshman Isaih Francis, sophomore Tyler Schultz and senior Patrick Lang.

Pignatelli captured the women’s 100 back (58.11) and 100 free (53.17) while Iwanow took top honors in the 100 breast (1:05.84) and 200 breast (2:22.99) and also swam on the victorious 200 medley relay team (1:48.44). Other members of that first-place relay included sophomore Eva Smith as well as juniors Haley Nowak and Ava Olsian.

Junior men’s diver Dylan Norby, meanwhile, met the NCAA Zone Standard in the three-meter event for the second time this season. His first-place score of 324.90 against NJIT met the three-meter standard of 320.00. Earlier in the season, Norby posted a qualifying score of 345.35 against Le Moyne back on Sept. 28.

Other individual winners on the men’s since included Francis in the 100 back (50.18), Schultz in the 100 breast (56.51), sophomore Ryaan Alshami in the 50 free (21.23), senior Liam Preston in the 100 free (45.90) and sophomore Jacob Koclanis in the one-meter diving competition (277.20).

In addition, Alshami, Francis and Preston joined senior Max Kaback to win the men’s 200 free relay (1:24.02).

Also winning individual events on the women’s side were senior Elizabeth Tirado in the three-meter diving event (260.85) and Nowak in the 100 fly (58.62).

Binghamton concludes the fall portion of its schedule with the Cleveland State/Magnus Cup Meet from Nov. 20-22.

NEWARK, N.J. – The NJIT swimming and diving team fell to Binghamton, 176.5-123.5, on Saturday at the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center (BWEC).

Yonatan Ahdut set both the pool and school record in the 1,000 free, winning the event with a time of 9:17.39.

Mohamed Walid won the 200 fly with a time of 1:49.86, followed closely by Pawel Drzymala at 1:50.08.

Andrew Cellar earned the victory in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:52.03.

Borys Endle took first in the 200 breaststroke (2:01.87) and the 400 IM (4:01.83).

NJIT swept the top three in the 100 fly, with Walid (49.44) winning the event, followed by Zachary Goad (50.36) and Drzymala (50.56).

NJIT will travel to Long Island for the ECAC Championships on Dec. 5-7.
