Canadian National Team Sprinter Kyla Leibel Commits to Texas

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Kyla Leibel of Red Deer in Alberta, Canada, has announced her commitment to swim for the University of Texas next fall. She wrote on social media:

“I am honoured to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Texas! I was blown away by their amazing coaching staff and fell in love with the teams family environment. I am so excited to contribute to such an outstanding team and better myself by training beside such a powerful group of girls. Hook em! 🤘”

Leibel swam for Red Deer Catalina Swim Club until September 2018, when she joined Swimming Canada’s NextGen Institute Program in Victoria. She moved back to Red Deer in January.

A sprint freestyle specialist, she represented Canada at last summer’s Pan Pacific Championships and again at Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in October. Her selection to the National Team came after a stellar performance at the Canadian Swimming Championships in April, where she earned silver medals in the 50 free (25.59) and 100 free (55.95) and placed 4th in the 200 (2:01.60), 5th in the 50 fly (27.62), and 6th in the 100 fly (1:01.76).

At Pan Pacs she placed 7th in the B final of the 200 free with 1:59.58. She also finished 7th in the B final of the 50 free (25.60), 7th in the B final of the 100 fly (1:00.75), and turned in the 23rd-fastest 100 free in prelims (55.37). She recently updated her PBs in the SCM 50/100/200 free and 50/100 fly at Ontario Junior International meet in December.

Leibel is a big pick-up for the Longhorns who will lose Anelise Diener, Brooke Hansen, and Remedy Rule to graduation after this season. She will suit up with Bridget Semenuk, Kelly Pash, Mary Smutny, and Miranda Heckman in the fall.
