Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Airi Mitsui has announced on social media that she will join the University of California, Berkeley’s swimming and diving team in the fall.
“I’m so excited to officially announce my commitment! I’ll be continuing my academic and athletic career at Cal 💛 I’m incredibly grateful to all my supporters—family, coaches and friends. Go Bears!🐻💛💙”
Mitsui, who turned 21 last month, represented Japan at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she competed in the 200 fly. She qualified for semi-finals with a 9th-place finish in prelims (2:09.12), then finished 11th in semis (2:08.71).
She swam her best LCM 50 fly (27.49 ) and 200 fly (2:06.54) times at Japan’s Olympic Trials last March. The latter bested her previous PB of 2:07.15 from her 5th-place finish in finals at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka. Her best LCM 100 fly performance (58.67) dates from 2022 Junior Pan Pacific Championships, where she won the 200 fly (2:07.82) and was runner-up in the 100. She also earned PBs in the 100 free (57.79) and 200 IM (2:15.94) at Junior Pan Pacs.
At Settecoli last summer, Mitsui went 2:01.94 in the 200 free.
Best LCM times (with conversion):
- 50 fly – 27.49 (24.13)
- 100 fly – 58.67 (51.59)
- 200 fly – 2:06.54 (1:51.47)
- 100 free – 57.79 (50.62)
- 200 free – 2:01.94 (1:46.97)
- 200 IM – 2:15.94 (1:59.58)
- 400 IM – 4:55.21 (4:20.18)
It took 1:52.91 to make the “A” final at 2025 NCAA Division I Women’s Championships. Cal did not have a swimmer in the top 8 but both Lea Polonsky (1:53.33 prelims/1:53.24 finals) and Lilou Ressencourt (1:53.54 prelims/1:53.41 finals) competed in the “B” final. Polonsky has graduated but Ressencourt will be back in Berkeley next fall. It took 51.35 to get a second swim in the 100 fly.
Also headed to Cal in August are incoming freshmen Teagan O’Dell (#2 in class), Claire Weinstein (#3), Annie Jia (#5), Elle Scott (#12), Ella Cosgrove (#18), Alexa McDevitt (“BOTR”), Gracyn Aquino, and Silje Slyngstadli.

It’s good to see more Japanese swimmers go overseas and experience things they wouldn’t experience staying in Japan.
It’s something that was needed after a seriously underwhelming Olympic cycle.
Swimswam listing Silje Slyngstadl as another commit is also quite interesting. LCM 100 breast (+200 LCM breast) quite speedy. A very solid class as Sparkle highlights.
Slyngstadli and Elle Scott will be a very solid training duo for their 4 years together.
Looks like Estonian breaststroker Egle Salu has committed to be part of the 2026 recruit class.
Congratulations on your decision Airi !!
You will grow so much as a person, swimmer, teammate over the next several years. Enjoy your journey.
Marsh magic dust strikes again! The Bears are coming on strong to a top 5 finish at 2026 NCAAs.
Aren’t the men and women separate at Cal?
Not anymore. Marsh took over both jobs. It was fairly big news when it happened
A chill settled over Charlottesville.
Closer ocean advantage
First Japanese Olympian to join the Cal women since Hiroko Nagasaki?
Fantastic pick up for the Cal ladies. Good luck Airi!
