Last weekend the Nashville Aquatic Club hosted a time trial meet for their own swimmers. Evan Petty, who will be a California Golden Bear in a few months, earned his first Olympic Trials Cut in the 100 backstroke.
Coming into the meet, Petty’s best long course time in the event was a 56.70 which he swam last October, which was just .11 off the (now) Wave I cut of 56.59. On Saturday, Petty dropped nearly a second off his time as he swam a 55.76. Not only did Petty earn his first trials cut but he is now just .25 away from the Wave II cut of 55.51.
Petty has shown improvement in a range of events since last fall. Since October he has swum best times in the following short course yards events except for the 100 fly:
- 50 free – 20.51
- 100 free – 45.13
- 100 back – 47.76
- 200 back – 1:45.44
- 200 breast – 2:07.22
- 100 fly – 50.01
- 200 IM – 1:49.61
Petty’s best long course times are as follows:
- 50 free – 23.58
- 100 free – 52.51
- 100 back – 55.76
- 100 fly – 56.97
- 200 IM – 2:08.08
All times have been set in 2021 aside from the 200 IM
Also racing on Saturday was Alex Massey. Massey is a freshman at Yale and did not compete this year as the Ivy League decided not to conduct winter sports this year due to the coronavirus. Massey has been training and competing with NAC this year. She swam the 200 fly on Saturday in a time of 2:14.24, which is within a second of her best time of 2:13.40 and below the Wave I cut time of 2:14.59.
