Big Ten All-Stars To Swim US National Team In Televised November Meet

An addition to the college meet lineup will pit the top swimmers in the Big Ten against the USA Swimming National Team in a two-day televised feature meet.

The meet  – which takes place November 12-13 at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis – is listed on several Big Ten schools’ schedules, including Purdue and Indiana. A Purdue press release also has some further details on the event.

According to the Purdue release, the top 3 returning swimmers in each event at Big Tens or NCAAs will be automatically added to the Big Ten All-Stars roster. More swimmers will be added so that each school in the conference is represented by at least two swimmers, and then the rest of the roster will be filled out by selections from the coaches.

We’ve reached out to coaches in the Big Ten and USA Swimming for more details on the event, but the Purdue release also says U.S. National teamers currently in the Big Ten (think Lilly King) would compete for the Big Ten All-Stars, while Big Ten alumni (think Cody Miller) would compete for the U.S. National Team.

The event is set to take place Saturday, November 12 and Sunday, November 13. The Purdue release says it expects live coverage from the Big Ten Network to be a part of the event.

Here’s the relevant portion of Purdue’s release:

IUPUI’s natatorium will also be the site of a new Big Ten vs. USA Swimming All-Star Meet, set for the weekend of Nov. 12 to 13. The Big Ten worked in conjunction with USA Swimming and the Big Ten Network to establish a two-day meet that will feature the league’s top swimmers vs. the U.S. National Team. Live television coverage from the BTN is expected to be in the mix. The Big Ten’s top three returning swimmers in each event at the 2016 Big Ten or NCAA Championships will be automatically selected for the conference team. Each men’s and women’s team from around the league will be represented by at least two swimmers regardless of their times, with the remainder of the Big Ten team filled out by coaches selections. Current student-athletes on the U.S. National Team will swim for the Big Ten squad, but alumni will represent Team USA.

When are they going to announce the Official team for this meet? It’s the end of October already & still no official word? How can they expect Fans & parents to make travel arrangements to this if there is no Final word? You have to book a hotel, buy Airline tickets & tickets to the event. Less people will be able to go with such short notice, especially since it is so close to the Holidays.

This is pretty cool. I swam in this event when they had it back in 1998-1999. It was at Northwestern. It was a fun meet.
