Beata Nelson Uses Summer League Meet As Nationals Tune Up

Sixteen-year-old age group standout Beata Nelson will be competing at the US Nationals starting tomorrow, however she already got some great racing experience in at a summer league meet over the weekend.

She swam only two individual events where she won by a sizable amount in each. In her first event, the 100m freestyle, she put up a time of 55.06. In her speciality, the 100m fly, Nelson rocked a swift 58.87.

Below are the time conversions to long course meters made using the Speedo swim time converter:

Event SCM Time Conversion Time
100 Free 55.06 56.66
100 Fly 58.87 1:00.26

Based on the conversions alone, Nelson swam the equivalent of a best time in each swim at the summer league meet. Her current personal best in the 100m free is a 56.80, and her conversion time was a 56.66.

Her 100m fly conversion showed an even larger time drop, making her 58.87 short course swim equivalent to a 1:00.26 long course. A 1:00.26 100m fly would be a personal best for Nelson by over half a second.

Assuming that Nelson is fully rested for US Nationals, there’s definite potential for her to be even faster than her conversion times at the meet. Nelson is currently seeded 46th in the 100m fly and a time around 1:00.00 could put her in the top 25. Based on her conversion time alone she would be heading into the competition seeded 31st.

Nelson will also be swimming the 100m free, 100m back, 200m IM, 50m freestyle, and 200m back in addition to her 100m fly.

Caroline McTaggart went 55.15 in MCSL this year (SCM with no starting block), beating a summer league record held by … Katie Ledecky! Ledecky still has the 100IM record.

MCSL is pretty stacked with talent. This year Carsten VIssering swam the 100 breast and went sub 1:00. A few years back Conger busted out 23.9 in the 50 fly and 53.48 in the 100 back.

I used to do something similiar but for different reasoning. I would swim summer league just so I could be the top dog for once before I would go back to being a nobody prelim swimmer at nats.
