Andriy Govorov Re-Breaks Ukrainian National Record In 50 Free Semis

2016 RIO OLYMPIC GAMES

After breaking his own Ukrainian national record in the prelims, Andriy Govorov did it again tonight in the semi-finals, going 21.46 to break his record from the morning of 21.49.

The record he broke this morning was his clocking of 21.61 from the Barcelona stop of the Mare Nostrum circuit this year. Govorov won all three legs of the that series, and has been on fire all of 2016 breaking 22 seconds for the thirteenth time this year tonight.

Govorov qualified 1st out of the prelims, and now sits in a tie for 2nd after the semis behind only defending Olympic champion Florent Manaudou of France. The man who he tied with is another Olympic gold medalist, Anthony Ervin, who tied for gold in this event 16 years ago in Sydney.

Govorov won silver in this race at the European Championships in May, again behind only Manaudou.

One of only five Ukrainian males swimming here in Rio, Govorov will look to win the country’s eighth Olympic swimming medal in their history tomorrow night.
