After Disappointing Summer, Hungarian Teen Vivien Jackl Breaks With Coach Shane Tusup

November 07th, 2025 International, News

While the 2025 Hungarian Short Course Championships continue to unfold this week from Debrecen, we have an update on the coaching change for rising 17-year-old Vivien Jackl.

According to the publication Magyar Nemzet, Jackl has split from Shane Tusup and has returned to Marta Kocsis in Tatabánya.

Jackl’s tutelage under Tusup, one-time coach and husband of Hungarian swimming legend Katinka Hosszu, was short-lived. The teen left Kocsis for Tusup in February of this year so their association lasted just over eight months.

During that time, Jackl’s performances were well off her previous breakthrough swims that brought the teen to the forefront of ‘those to watch’ in this Olympic cycle.

Jackl topped the women’s 1500m freestyle podium at the 2024 European Championships and also earned silver in the 400m IM there in Belgrade.

Prior to that, she collected six European Junior Championships medals, including back-to-back 400m IM golds in 2023 and 2024.

Although she did reap bronze in the 400m IM and 1500m free at this year’s European Junior Championships, Jackl missed advancing to a final in any of her events at this year’s World Championships and was sub-par at the World Junior Championships.

Her lifetime bests in the aforementioned events rest at 4:34.96 and 16:06.37, respectively. However, in Singapore, Jackl mustered just 4:43.02 to place 11th in the 400m IM and 16:29.60 to finish 17th in the 1500m free.

Then in Otopeni, Romania, Jackl clocked 4:44.42 to place 7th in the 400m IM and notched 16:39.42 to finish 8th in the 1500m free.

Jackl is not competing at the Hungarian SC Championships this week.

worth mentioning that he tried to coach other world class swimmers since Katinka and always failed. Maybe training soccer players…. oh wait?

How did Hoszu swim so fast under him?

I honestly think Shane is a decent coach but he’s not everyone’s cup of tea. With Hoszu, I also think that he got insanely lucky. One in a million talent.

Hosszu swam fast before and after him too.

She had an unbreakable mindset post London, she could take a maniac pushing her. It’s very rare that works for athletes though.

mainly thanks to the speed at which she moved in the water.

Yet another evidence Tusup was lucky he met Hosszu.

Isn’t Shane Tusup a swimswam commenter? I hadn’t heard of him prior to this article, except for a user in the comments named “the real shane tusup” or something, which was weird because I didn’t know he was a notable figure or anything

….hahahaha! I’m not sure if that’s true, but you are among the .00000001% who uses their real name. I wish more people would. I wish elites would.

Y’all feed off the anonymity and gossip though. No shade, I like it.

But y’all know where the bread is buttered. You actively avoid so many standard hurdles to make anonymous commenting easier. No logins, no karma, minimal verification, minimal moderation.

Again, I think this is a net good. The community generally self regulates.

But it’s always funny when you commiserate with athletes complaining about the comment section. While actively making it as easy as possible to be toxic.

You can be honest to swimmers that this comment model isn’t as much an unfortunate side effect as it is the reason for your success.

She explicitly said she wants to go to Texas. With her strengths, probably a better option too.

Truth nuke. 🤭

She’s also best friends with Kiki and swims the literal same events as Katie Grimes, whose decline at UVA is hardly inspiring.

Didn’t see this coming!
