The 2026 Dutch European Swimming Trials concluded last night from Eindhoven, which means we now know who will be representing the nation at this year’s European Championships.

26-year-old World Record holder Marrit Steenbergen leads the squad, with the versatile ace carrying four events into her Paris schedule.

Steenbergen notched a new Dutch national record in the women’s 100m backstroke last week, posting a mighty 58.33 as a new lifetime best. She also nailed victories in the 50m fly, 50m free and 100m free, with the latter coming in at a blistering 51.82.

She wasn’t the only one to take down a Dutch standard, as Sean Niewold delivered a pair of benchmark-breaking performances.

The former University of Alabama swimmer crushed a new lifetime best of 22.69 in the men’s 50m butterfly, followed by a head-turning mark of 21.56 in the 50m freestyle, both establishing new Dutch standards.

Niewold also qualified for the European Championships in the 100m free, hitting a new lifetime best of 47.80 to become the 2nd-fastest Dutchman in history.

Additional qualifiers include Olympic medalist Caspar Corbeau, who made the grade in the men’s 200m breaststroke, and Maaike de Waard earning her spots in the 100m back and 50m fly.

Absent from the roster is two-time Olympic medalist Arno Kamminga, with the 30-year-old veteran missing the mark in his signature breaststroke events.

The Netherlands did not send a squad to the 2024 European Championships due to the overcrowded schedule that year, which included Long Course World Championships in February, the Paris Olympic Games over the summer and the Short Course World Championships that year in December.

At the 2022 European Championships, however, the Dutch finished 4th in the overall swimming medal table, amassing a total of 11 pieces of hardware, including 4 golds.

Individual gold medalists included Steenbergen topping the podium in the 100m free and 200m free. The women’s 4x200m freestyle relay found gold, as did the mixed medley relay.

One rising star to keep an eye on among the roster for this year’s event is 17-year-old Jinth Engelse. The teen rocked new Dutch Youth Records in the 50m fly and 100m back in recent months and has dominated the nation’s youth categories in both disciplines to establish herself as a bona fide talent for the national team.
