The 2026 Sun Devil Open kicked off on Friday night, and Adam Chaney won the stacked men’s 50 freestyle final in 22.10, his fastest 50 freestyle since he swam 21.89 at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2024.
He came in just ahead of Jonny Kulow, who swam 22.36 in 2nd place. This was a half-second add from the 21.73 he swam in June of last summer. Patrick Sammon finished 3rd (22.84), and Ilya Kharun was 6th (23.28), though Kharun swam butterfly instead of freestyle.

The top women’s swimmer of the session was 17-year-old Paige Downey from Gold Medal Swim Club. She won two events on night one of the meet, setting top times in the 400 free and 1500 free.
In the 400, she swam 4:16.58, just missing her lifetime best of 4:16.42 which she swam at last summer’s National Championships. She won the event by just a tenth over Grace Lindberg’s 4:16.66 in 2nd.
INn the same session, Downey raced the 1500 freestyle, winning that event in 16:38.89. This swim was 16 seconds off her lifetime best of 16:22.67 from August of 2025. She won by more than a minute over Gold Medal Swim Club teammate Alexa Largent’s 17:32.67 in 2nd. Downey is committed to Indiana for the fall.
The respective men’s events went to Kevin Foley and Benjamin Butler. Foley won the 1500 in 16:29.48, which was a 10 second add from the 16:18.03 he set in July of 2025.
Butler, who competes for the University of Arizona won the 400 free in 3:57.64, just two hundredths off the 3:57.62 he set in July.
The women’s 50 free final saw Marie Wattel win in 25.28, just ahead of Albane Cachot‘s 25.51 in 2nd. Wattel’s best stands at 24.54 from June of 2021 while Cachot was a little off the 25.31 she swam in July of 2024.

Please note:
1. Downey’s 1500 was the FINAL women’s event of the session, with the 400 Free swum about an hour EARLIER.
2.As noted she won the 1500 by more than a second; in fact, she won by more than a MINUTE. Downey broke her own meet record by 12+ seconds (from 16:51+ down to 16:38.89).
3.The Women’s 50 freestyle (Wattel at :25.28) was the only other meet record to fall; Taylor Ruck had set the meet mark last year in :25.40. Chaney missed Kulow’s Men’s meet mark by 0.06.
4.Wattel and Cachot (both of whom represent France internationally) were separated by only 0.01 in prelims, finishing 0.01 and 0.02 back of Ruck’s meet mark. Cachot’s prelim time of… Read more »

He does this occasionally. Swims the Fly when he makes a final in the 50 free. I’ve seen Liendo do this also, recently.
sometimes you see breaststrokers do this as well
