Loads of talent will take over the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center for some mid-May racing at the 2026 Sun Devil Open. Among the key names in attendance are several current and former Arizona State swimmers, including Ilya Kharun, Patrick Sammon, and Jonny Kulow.

Kharun is coming off two wins at the Ft Lauderdale Open just over a week ago, winning both the 50 fly (22.96) and the 100 fly (50.87). In Tempe, he is entered to race four events: the 200 fly (top seed), 50 free (3rd), 50 back (11th), and 50 breast (13th).

That men’s 50 free is set to be one of the meet’s most stacked races, with major names racing alongside Kharun, such as Remi Fabiani (21.91), Kulow (22.04), Adam Chaney (22.15), Grant House (22.15), and Sammon (22.54).

Fabiani is entered in six races for this weekend: the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 50 back, 50 fly, and 50 breast. Fabiani is coming off a successful NCAA Championships for the Sun Devil men, having helped lead the 200 free, 400 free, and 400 medley relays to NCAA titles, and individually finishing 5th in both the 50 free (18.54) and 200 free (1:30.81).

Another member of those key relays is Kulow, who also contributed to those three relay victories and added a 5th-place performance in the 100 free (40.76) and a 6th-place showing in the 50 free (18.55). At this Sun Devil Open, he has entered only the 50 and 100 freestyles.

Sammon, who erupted for a career season last summer for the American World Championships team, also raced in Ft. Lauderdale, notably swimming a career-best 100 fly in 53.21 while finishing 3rd in the 100 free (48.76) and 4th in the 200 free (1:47.66). Like Kulow, Sammon is racing only the 50 and 100 free at this meet.

Several other talents will be in attendance, including Paige Downey, who will make her collegiate debut next season at Indiana, racing the 200 free, 400 free, 800 free, 1500 free, 100 back, 200 back, 200 fly, and 400 IM.

Current Sun Devil and 3-time Big 12 Champion this past season, Albane Cachot comes into this meet as the top seed in all four of her events: the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, and 50 fly.

I wonder why Kharun is swimming the 50 Back and 50 Breast? He doesn’t swim IMs. How odd.

Seriously??

You’ve never seen a swimmer swam events outside their core events?

It happens all the time my dude.

Of course I’ve seen it. Yeesh. I’ve seen Kharun swim a lot of different events in SCY, especially. Just thought it was slightly odd that he’d be doing a breaststroke and backstroke event. Especially in LC. And especially considering that he doesn’t swim any IM events.

Also, I’m not a dude

In one of his youtube videos he says he went 20 low in the 50 yd back. Makes me wonder what he could do if he was fully prepped for a 50 back and 100 back

It is a typo. LOL, cannot imagine how painful a 500 backstroke would be. My legs hurt just thinking about that. He is entered in the 50 back

I figure more people will see this here, but Murphy’s gonna be in Sacramento and it looks like Ben Sampson is at the OTC with the Texas team so that pro group might be 17, instead of 16

I am pretty sure Ben Sampson is helping coach the pro group.
