The Speedo Sectionals in Walnut wrapped up on Sunday, and leading the success were Katrin Otaegi and Lucas Crother-Collado, who each picked up wins in the 50 butterfly and 50 free to put an end to the meet.
Otaegi managed to nab a solid win on day three in the 100 fly, swimming a new lifetime best of 1:01.21 in the process. On the final day, she managed to complete the sprint fly sweep, winning the 50 fly in 26.91, marking her first time under the 27-second mark. She previously held a best time of 27.24 from the Sacramento Pro Swim Series in May.
In addition to her fly success, Otaegi later in the session would find herself on top of the podium again in the 50 free. She narrowly held off 15-year-old Clara Young (26.09), turning in the only sub 26-second performance in the field in 25.91. That time was just off her lifetime best from the Sacramento Pro Series in May of 25.89.
On the men’s side, Crother-Collado, 19, topped the men’s 50 free final, turning in the only sub-23-second performance of the final in 22.86; the next closest finisher to Crother-Collado was 16-year-old Edward Chen, touching just behind in 23.19. Similar to Otaegi, Crother-Collado picked up the 50 fly win as well, touching one-hundredth better than Hamish McLellan (24.33), touching in 24.32.
Alyssa Ton, 17, was untouchable in the women’s 200 IM, touching nearly two seconds ahead of the rest of the field in 2:17.15. Only Marley Spray, 15, managed to swim under the 2:19 barrier in 2:18.99.
Stanford’s Daniel Li took the 200 IM win on the men’s side, though it was not without a nail-biting finish. Li touched first in 2:06.37; just behind him was Bekzhan Yessengeldy of UC San Diego, who couldn’t hold off the 28.39 final 50 split, just missing out on the win by one-hundredth of a second in 2:06.38. Seth Collet also turned in a sub-2:07 performance to finish 3rd in 2:06.96.
