Houston Rolls To Dominant Win Over Rice At Home, 152-81

HOUSTON – The University of Houston Swimming & Diving team defeated Rice, 152-81 and recorded 12 first-place finishes on Saturday at the CRWC Natatorium in its final dual-meet of the season.

Starting the meet off on a high note, the 400-yard medley relay team of sophomore Alexia Duncan, junior Evelyn Entrekin, senior Noor El Gendy and senior Liya Goupil swept the competition by three seconds with a time of 3:36.63.

The Cougars followed this up by winning eight consecutive events.

Sophomore Sienna Bruner continued the winning streak in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.82.

Duncan continued the lead with two top finishes in the backstroke events. She finished the 100-yard with a time of 54.06 and the 200-yard with a time of 1:58.60.

Junior Sydney Nethercutt landed in the top position in the 200-yard butterfly after touching the wall at 1:58.33.

Goupil led the way in both the 50-yard (23.35) and 100-yard freestyle (50.45) events to extend the win streak.

Junior Evelyn Entrekin scored the top position with a time of 1:01.88 in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Senior Virag Peter won the final individual event of the day in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:13.42.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Goupil, senior Jenna Kerkman, Bruner and junior Manita Sathianchokwisan closed out the meet, securing the victory with a time of 4:20.16.

On the boards, junior diver Michelle McLeod claimed the top positions in the 1-meter (296.78) and 3-meter (331.50) competitions.

UP NEXT
Houston will host its last home meet of the season at the First Chance Meet at CWRC Natatorium Feb. 6-7. The meet is expected to begin at 3 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.

HOUSTON – Rice swim and dive closed out the dual-meet portion of its season with a 81-152 loss to Houston on Friday.

Ella Dyson led the Owls with a pair of first-place finishes, winning the 1,000 free in 9:49.28 and the 500 free in 4:50.55. Reese Cole added a victory in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:18.06, while Lily Archibald claimed first place in the 100 butterfly in 54.05.

Avery Karacz turned in two runner-up finishes, placing second in the 200 free (1:52.67) and the 100 free (50.01). Siiri Einio earned third place in both breaststroke events, finishing the 100 breast in 1:03.11 and the 200 breast in 2:15.25.

Rice finished second in both relay events, in the 400 medley relay (3:39.28) and the 200 free relay (1:32.25).

On the boards, Antonina Harned placed in both diving events, taking second on the 3-meter with a score of 284.03 and third on the 1-meter with a 274.95.

Head coach Seth Huston said he was encouraged by the Owls’ progress as they continue to prepare for the postseason.

“I really like what I have seen in training over the past couple of weeks,” Huston said. “Our racing needs to catch up to our training.”

Huston also emphasized the importance of returning to competition after a three-week break.

“We needed to get up here and race, as we have not competed in three weeks,” Huston said. “I was really happy with Siiri EinioJessica Lawton and Ella Dyson. I see a lot of good things happening, and I feel like we are moving in the right direction.”

Rice returns to action next week at the CRWC Natatorium, for the First Chance Meet hosted by Houston on Feb. 6–7.
