IU Indy Gets Wins Over Wabash and Butler on Senior Day

INDIANAPOLIS – The IU Indianapolis men’s and women’s swim and dive teams turned in commanding performances Saturday at the IU Natatorium, earning team victories on both sides of the meet. The Jaguar men defeated Wabash, 232–128, while the women edged Butler, 187–164.

IU Indy opened the meet with relay victories on both sides. The women’s 200-yard medley relay team of Addy Hirsbrunner, Vicky Surdyka, Dani Stemper and Luca McGee touched first in 1:43.04, while the men’s quartet of Grayson TidwellLogan KellyHugo Arteaga and Yassin Abdelghany won the 200 medley relay in 1:28.27. Distance events followed suit as Bella Tufts claimed the women’s 1000 freestyle in 10:15.19, and Michael Esdon captured the men’s 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:18.84.

Sprint success highlighted the middle of the meet for the Jaguars. Dani Stemper won the women’s 50 butterfly in 25.42, while Isaac Wilson earned the men’s 50 butterfly title in 21.62. Hirsbrunner added another victory by taking the women’s 200 freestyle in 1:52.97, and Jack Gallob led a Jaguar sweep in the men’s 200 freestyle with a winning time of 1:39.51.

Backstroke and breaststroke events continued to favor IU Indy, as Aubrey Hollis won the women’s 100 backstroke in 55.17, and Anthony Braun took the men’s 100 backstroke in 50.01. Vicky Surdyka followed with a win in the women’s 100 breaststroke at 1:03.84, while Shane Tebeest secured the men’s 100 breaststroke in 56.28.

The Jaguars stayed in control through the latter half of the meet. Grayson Tidwell captured the men’s 200 butterfly in 1:48.67, and Luca McGee led a sweep of the women’s 50 freestyle, winning in 24.15. David Niemiec followed with a men’s 50 freestyle victory at 20.62, while McGee returned to the top by winning the women’s 50 breaststroke in 29.24.

IU Indy closed out the swimming events with additional wins from Addy Hirsbrunner in the women’s 100 freestyle (51.91), Yassin Abdelghany in the men’s 100 freestyle (43.76), Bella Tufts in the women’s 200 backstroke (2:03.32), Youssef Magdy in the men’s 500 freestyle (4:32.33), Dani Stemper in the women’s 100 butterfly (57.08) and Abdelghany again in the men’s 100 butterfly (47.53).

On the diving boards, Sebastian Otero capped off the meet with a dominant performance in the men’s 1-meter dive, winning with a score of 384.30, while Blake VanderJeugdt finished second with 348.68 to further secure the Jaguars’ team victory.

The sweep capped off the regular season for the Jags as they now prepare for the Horizon League Championships on February 18-21. The Championships will be hosted by IU Indy in the IU Natatorium.

Butler completed action against IU Indy on Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis. IU Indy narrowly edged the Bulldogs, 191-160.

 

Sadie Brown and Meghan Voelker were named swimmers of the meet by the coaching staff. Brown set a personal best in the 500 Free while having solid performances in the 100 breast and 100 IM. Voelker posted stellar times in the 200 Fly, 50 Fly and 100 Free.

 

Butler will be back in action tomorrow, Feb. 1, as BU will host the 17th Annual Butler Invite. The Dawgs’ will also celebrate Senior Day on Sunday.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Wabash College swimming and diving team wrapped up its dual-meet schedule for the 2025–26 season with a 232–128 loss to IU Indianapolis on Saturday at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.

The Little Giants produced several top scoring performances against the Division I Jaguars, highlighted by strong breaststroke swims and multiple first-place scoring efforts in exhibition events.

Freshman Lew Sams delivered one of Wabash’s top swims of the meet in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing third overall and scoring first-place points with a time of 2:06.84. Senior Morgan Govekar followed in the same event, placing fourth overall and earning second-place points after touching the wall in 2:23.74.

Junior Nicholas Plumb led a sweep of scoring positions in the 50-yard backstroke. Plumb finished third overall to score first-place points with a time of 24.92. Freshman Owen Thomas placed fourth to collect second-place points in 26.67, while junior Nicholas Sommers rounded out the scoring with a fifth-place finish in 28.78 to earn third-place points.

Sophomore Ryan West added another first-place scoring effort for Wabash in the 100-yard individual medley. West finished fourth overall but scored first-place points with a time of 53.06. Freshman Abbas Hakim followed in fifth place, earning second-place points in 58.59.

Wabash also earned first-place points in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Hakim, Quinn Sweeney, West, and William Renie finished fifth overall with a time of 1:28.90 while topping the scoring among eligible competitors.

In individual races, sophomore Mason Gilliam turned in a third-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle, clocking 9:43.42. Senior Aidan Mason added a second-place showing in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 26.31.

Sweeney placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.90, followed by senior John Allen, who finished fifth in 1:49.91. West contributed another fourth-place effort in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 50.70.

The Little Giants placed two swimmers in the 100-yard breaststroke, led by Hakim’s fourth-place finish in 1:02.07. Sophomore Cooper Kowalski followed closely with a fifth-place swim at 1:02.20.

Plumb added a fourth-place result in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:55.86, while freshman Andres Tejada placed fifth in 2:01.53. Renie finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.76, and Mason added a fifth-place effort in 24.94. Allen later collected a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 50.36.

Freshman Aidan Gubbins closed out the distance events for Wabash with a fifth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:01.55. Gilliam and freshman Carter Ramsey also added top-five finishes in the 100-yard butterfly, with Ramsey placing fourth in 55.82 and Gilliam finishing fifth in 56.48.

Wabash turns its attention to the annual North Coast Athletic Conference Championships, scheduled to take place February 11-4 at the Trumball Aquatics Center on the campus of Denison University in Granville, Ohio.
