Justina Kozan, Chmielewski Brothers Lead USC To Sweeps of UNLV & UC San Diego

LOS ANGELES – USC swimming and diving dominated the day, sweeping both UNLV and UC San Diego to kick off the second half of the season.

The No. 11 Women of Troy picked up 11 event wins while No. 18 Troy earned nine.

Both 200 medley relay squads opened the meet with victories. On the women’s side Dora MolnarBella BritoSage Miller and Nicole Maier combined to finish with a time of 1:39.15 to take the event. Vaggelis MakrygiannisMichal ChmielewskiJunhao Chan and Oliver Sogaard-Anderson came in at 1:25.69 to take it on the men’s side. 

Minna Abraham captured the 1000 free with a massive swim, touching the wall at 9:39.36. The time marks the sixth fastest time in program history. 

The Trojans swept the 200 free, with Bella Brito finishing with a time of 1:47.79 for the women and Krzysztof Chmielewski at 1:35.23 for the men. 

Krzysztof was a double winner, securing the victory in the 100 fly with a time of 46.86. 

Makrygiannis met the qualifying standard in two events. In the 100 back, Makrygiannis won the event, coming in at 46.25. The graduate student finished the 200 back with a time of 1:41.42 for his second individual win of the day.

Trojan Sanberk Oktar claimed two event wins in the 100 breast (53.71) 200 IM (1:47.68). Chan and Stuart Timmerman followed Oktar to complete the 1-2-3 USC finish in the 100 breast.

Coming off a win in the 200 medley relay, Michal clocked a time of 1:41.71 to take the 200 fly. 

Nicole Maier captured the 50 free (22.50). The Women of Troy then completed a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 free. Claire Tuggle finished first (49.43) followed by Caelle Armijo (49.72) and Brito (49.83).

Lindsay Barnes won the 200 back before the Trojans went 1-2-3 in the 200 breaststroke thanks to Daniela Karnaugh (2.12.28), Ella Flowers (2.12.44) and Katherine Adams (2:14.92).
The 500 free saw yet another top three sweep as Alisee Pisane (4:49.02), Molnar (4:49.23) and Dormans (4:49.95) claimed the three fastest finishes. 

Raphael Sibuet claimed a close contest in the 500 free on the men’s side with a time of 4:27.94.

Justina Kozan (53.01), Abraham (53.09) and Sage Miller (53.29) captured the top three spots in the 100 fly.

Kozan was a double winner by claiming her second victory of the day in the 200 IM thanks to a 1:56.01 finish. 

The 200 free relay squad of Abraham, Tuggle, Maier and Kozan combined to finish with a time of 1:29.98 to wrap up a successful day at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center.

The Trojans will host Cal on Friday Jan. 16 and Stanford on Jan. 17 when the team will celebrate its annual senior day.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – UC San Diego displayed strong performances on both the men’s and women’s sides at their latest meet facing UNLV and USC at Uytengsu Aquatic Center.

The Tritons earned 141 points on the men’s side to 118, earned by UNLV. On the women’s side, the Tritons also beat UNLV, outscoring them 151 to 111. To USC, UC San Diego men fell 174 points to 87. UC San Diego women were topped 189 points to 73.

MEN’S HIGHLIGHTS
Zachary Tower had himself a day in the pool winning the 1000 Freestyle (9:08.86) and finishing second in the 500 Freestyle (4:28.25). Following him in the 500 Freestyle, Charlie Franz placed third (4:49.02). Bekzhan Yessengeldy won the Tritons another event in the 200 Breaststroke (1:59.48). Hunter Cehelnik, coming off a strong performance at the Tritons’ last meet, placed third in the 100 Freestyle (44.11) and second in the 100 Butterfly (47.00). Jacob Wang broke into the podium for the 50 Freestyle finishing third (20.56). Luigi Franco had a second-place finish in the 200 Backstroke. UC San Diego A, William SeymourAdrian Bellido, Cehelnik, and Zach Elian, placed second in the 200 Medley Relay (1:27.40). Finishing out the meet, Seymour, Wang, Elian, and Aidan Rikic earned a third-place finish in the 200 Freestyle Relay (1:21.33).

WOMEN’S HIGHLIGHTS
Asia Kozan dominated through her performances, earning herself an NCAA qualifying time in the 200 IM (1:57.12), subsequently breaking a program record in the event. Kozan anchored the 200 Medley Relay with a 22.37 split. In the event she was joined by Madison O’ConnellChloe Braun, and Eva Boehlke. Kozan then claimed the 200 Butterfly (1:57.56) and placed third with her relay team in the 200 Freestyle (1:32.27), also consisting of O’Connell, Dani Carter, and Addison Everage. Boehlke also commanded in her events, winning the 100 Backstroke (53.73) and finishing second in the 200 Backstroke (1:56.99). Braun topped the 100 Breaststroke (1:00.53).

The Tritons will return home for a men’s meet against Stanford. The meet will be held at Canyonview Aquatic Center on Friday, Jan. 16th.

LOS ANGELES (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men’s and women’s swimming teams fell in their double duals vs. USC and UC San Diego on Friday at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center.

On the men’s side, the Scarlet & Gray faced losses to the Trojans, 180-82, and to the Tritons, 141-118. On the women’s side, the Rebels were defeated by USC, 215-46, and UCSD, 151-111.

THE RUNDOWN – MEN:

– In a 1-2 Rebel finish of the 50 free, senior Bryson Huey won the event with a time of 19.48, while sophomore Lucas Diermayr followed in second place (20.48).
– Earning another event victory, Huey posted a time of 43.93 to win the 100 free.
– In a Rebel 200 free relay victory, the ‘A’ team of Huey, Diermayr, Perez and Potgieter combined for a time of 1:19.46.
– In the 1000 free, freshman Logan Calhoun swam the ninth-fastest time in program history (9:16.53) to place fourth overall.
– Adding two top-5 finishes in the 200 free, sophomore Kiril Stepanov earned a third-place finish (1:37.62), while Ambrus Barcsak followed behind in fourth (1:38.13).
– In the 100 back, Potgieter earned a second-place finish with a time of 47.51.
– Adding more top-5 finishes in the 200 fly, redshirt junior Colby Raffel (1:46.95) and senior Ian Belflower (1:46.99) placed third and fourth, respectively.
– Junior Nate Thomason placed fourth in the 200 breast with a time of 2:01.03.

THE RUNDOWN – WOMEN:

– In the 1000 free, junior Ava Olson broke her own school record with a time of 9:50.25 to place third overall. It surpassed her previous record by 1.57 seconds.
– In the 200 medley relay, the ‘A’ squad of junior Dominika Trentkiewicz, senior Erika Carlson, sophomore Lauren Palacios and junior Fernanda Mendez Guerra posted a fourth-place finish (1:41.65).
– Senior Gina Miller posted a fourth-place finish in the 200 free (1:48.68), while Carlson followed closely behind in sixth (1:49.00).
– Leading the Rebels in the 100 back, junior Dominika Trentkiewicz finished in fifth place with a time of 55.46.
– In the 50 free, Mendez Guerra sped her way to a third-place finish (23.11).
– The Scarlet & Gray added multiple other fourth-place finishes, freshman Rachel Wigginton placed fourth in the 200 fly (1:59.95), sophomore Grace Wharton finished fourth in the 200 back (1:58.85), Olson claimed fourth in the 500 free (4:50.81) and Mendez Guerra took fourth in the 100 fly (53.67).

UP NEXT: The Scarlet & Gray women’s group will face UNR on Friday, Jan. 23, with events starting at 3 p.m. PT. The men’s and women’s squads will return to action together for a dual meet against Fresno Pacific on Saturday, Jan. 24.
