UNLV Women, Colorado Mesa Men Claim Victories At UNLV Finis Invite

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams closed out their annual UNLV Finis Invitational on Wednesday at Jim Reitz Pool.

The Rebel women won with a tally of 940 points for a 158.5 advantage over the second-place finisher, Tulane. The Scarlet & Gray men placed second with 789.5 total points.

THE RUNDOWN – WOMEN:
– The Rebel women had two swimmers with sub-two minute times in the 200 fly.  Sophomore Lauren Palacios won the event with the fifth-fastest time in program history (1:58.99) while junior Ava Olson swam a 1:59.16 to finish second.
– The Scarlet & Gray women had two top-5 finishes in the 200 back. Sophomore Grace Wharton led the duo with a second-place finish (1:58.47), while junior Dominika Trentkiewicz placed fourth (1:58.58).
– Adding more top-5 finishes in the 100 free, senior Erika Carlson swam a 49.63 to place second and her senior counterpart Gina Miller finished fourth (50.76).
– In the 200 breast, freshman Rachel Wigginton posted a third-place finish with a season-best time of 2:17.86.
– The Rebels’ 400 free relay team of Carlson, Miller, senior Averi Webb and Olson teamed for a second-place finish (3:21.12).
– In the 1-meter dive, junior Chelsey Dorosh took second place with a finals score of 258.75. Sophomore Allyse Abbott had a finals score of 257.30 to land in third.

THE RUNDOWN – MEN:
– Earning an event win in the 200 fly, senior Ian Belflower posted a winning time of 1:45.48.
– In a Rebel 400 free relay victory, the group of redshirt sophomore Emil Perez, junior Ambrus Barcsak, junior Wikus Potgieter and senior Bryson Huey combined for a time of 2:52.96.
– In the 200 back, junior Tatsuki Inoue posted a second-place finish with a season-best time of 1:43.74.
– Barcsak took second in the 100 free with a season-best time of 43.58.
– Adding another top-5 finish, junior Nate Thomason claimed a second-place finish with a season-best time of 1:57.79.
– In the 3-meter dive, freshman Aidan Favela landed in seventh place with a finals score of 229.05.

UP NEXT: The UNLV men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will return to action when they travel to the Golden State for a dual meet against USC on Friday, Jan. 9 at 1 p.m. PT.

LAS VEGAS— Guillaume Guth and Aron Jonsson both won events as the Colorado Mesa University men’s swimming and diving team capped a convincing victory at the UNLV Finis Invitational, which wrapped up Wednesday night here in the Rebels’ Buchanan Natatorium.

The Maverick men scored 996 ½ team points and won the meet by 207 points over host UNLV (789 ½) and three other NCAA Division I opponents in Wyoming (611), Cal Baptist (610) and the University of the Pacific (504).

CMU’s women also defeated three Division I squads and finished third out of seven teams with 688 ½ points with only UNLV (980) and Tulane (781 ½) finishing ahead of the Mavs.

Guth claimed his second individual and sixth total win of the meet, taking the 100-yard freestyle in 43.57 seconds as he out-touched UNLV’s Ambrus Barcsak by a single hundredth of a second.

Meanwhile, Jonsson claimed the 200 breaststroke in 1:57.31.  Marcos Otero also reached the final, cruising to eight place.  Miles Moran also won the consolation final in 2:00.99.

The Maverick women picked up a second place finish from Hanna Sasivarevic, who posted a time of 16:59.26 in the 1,650 freestyle, the first event of the evening and a discipline win that the Maverick men did not compete in.

Abby Uhl then led the Maverick women in the 200 backstroke as she finished fifth in 2:00.06 after Taylar Hooton won the “B” final in 2:03.27.

Luka Samsonov also took fifth in the men’s half of the event, finishing in 1:48.86 after swimming to a time of 1:48.23 in the morning preliminaries.  Ethan Viescas (1:49.78) and Jackson Moe (1:49.83) also broke 1:50 and took the top two spots in the consolation final.

Ada Qunell then took eighth in the women’s 100 free after qualifying for it in 50.22 seconds minutes before Guth’s victory.

Maya Clise then took eighth in the women’s 200 breast in 2:21.13 after qualifying in 2:20.71, less than a second off her season-best.

The Maverick women also had two finalists in the 200 butterfly final as Amber Siverts placed seventh while Kiara Borchardt took eighth.  They had qualified in 2:04.65 and 2:04.74, respectively.

Freshman Micah Moore then turned in a solid third place time of 1:47.19 in the men’s half of the event.

The Mavs then finished the meet in the 400 free relay with the men’s quartet of Guth, Otero, Oskar Sawicki and Marcus Pineiro combining for a season-best time of 2:54.31, which moved the Mavs up to fourth in the nation this season.

The women’s group of Hooton, Reagan Horn, Sasivarevic and Hooton took sixth in 3:25.55.

In the afternoon, the Maverick divers contested the “A” finals of the men’s 3-meter and women’s 1-meter that had held preliminary and consolation finals on Tuesday.

David Roethlisberger led four men scoring 315.15 points to take second on the taller springboard.  Ryan Campbell also easily surpassed the NCAA qualifying standard, placing third with 308.80 points.  Giani Benoit finished sixth with 269.05 points while Ty Mitton took eighth (219.30).

Kenya Meyer (246.15), Jenna Hurley (242.40) and Emma Lence (237.85) finished sixth through eight for the Maverick women.

The Mavericks will now scatter for the holiday break before returning to competition on Jan. 17, 2026 when the Mavs will take on Denver and Wyoming at the University of Denver.
