Amalie Smith Nails European Jr Record In 400 IM At English SC Championships

2025 SWIM ENGLAND NATIONAL WINTER CHAMPIONSHIPS

On the heels of this year’s European Short Course Championships, the 2025 Swim England National Winter Championships have gotten underway from the storied Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield.

Day two of the competition saw a powerful performance at the hands of 16-year-old Amalie Smith in the final of the women’s 400m IM.

RTW Monson’s Smith stopped the clock at a mighty effort of 4:30.64, beating the field by over 7 seconds en route to earning gold.

Guildford’s Holly Hopwood registered 4:38.30 for silver and Camden Swiss athlete Ines Guimond-Beetham rounded out the podium in 4:40.50.

Smith’s effort this evening checked in as a monster personal best, crushing her former PB of 4:37.79 put on the books at last year’s edition of this competition.

Her outing also overtook the previous European Junior benchmark standard of 4:31.06 established at the time LEN Aquatics began recognizing junior records.

Entering this competition, Smith’s lifetime best in this SCM 400 IM rested at the 4:37.79 produced at the 2024 edition of these championships. As such, in the course of a year, Smith managed to drop over 4 seconds off that result to check in as the 7th-best British performer in history.

She is quite a small girl but has great feel for the water and looked very comfortable. It’s a shame none of Shanahan/Colbert/Wood were racing as I think they’d have taken her a chunk faster .

Remember last year when Amalie Smith (UK) and Amelie Smith (AUS), who are the same age, swam the exact same 4IM time on the exact same day on opposite sides of the world? That was so weird.

Looks like UK’s Smith is progressing faster now though

Amelie has been swimming really well at local level domestic stuff she would have been under serious workload for (went 4:47 at the meet meh Harris was at a few weeks back). Think a big drop is coming from her in near future. Will be interesting to see how she looks at QLD states next week.

Yeah, looking at her stroke PBs she is due a drop. The only difference between them is that Amalie Smith is a great backstroker and has a lot more speed over 100/200. Their breast/mid-distance free ability is uncannily similar.
