The 2025 Italian Short Course Championships saw day two unfold from Riccione with our first national record going down at the hands of 30-year-old veteran Lisa Angiolini.
As we reported, Angiolini, who missed this year’s European Short Course Championships due to battling bronchitis, fired off a new personal best of 2:18.96 to grab the women’s 200m breaststroke gold here.
Her effort overwrote the former Italian standard of 2:19.17 Francesca Fangio put on the books in 2022. You can read more about Angiolini’s new record here.
National record holder Alessandro Miressi was in the water on day two, taking on the men’s 100m freestyle final.
27-year-old Miressi punched a result of 46.77 as the sole competitor of the field to delve under the 47-second barrier.
Behind him were Lorenzo Ballarati and Mirko Chiaversoli, who captured the minor medals in respective swims of 47.11 and 47.14.
As for Olympian Miressi, his 46.77 outing was enough for gold, but well off his best-ever and Italian national record of 45.51 notched en route to becoming the European Short Course Championships silver medalist in 2023.
Michele Lamberti stole the spotlight in the men’s 100m backstroke, reaping the gold in a time of 50.57, a new lifetime best.
His result shaved .29 off his former PB of 50.86 logged at the 2021 European Short Course Championships.
Tonight, Lamberti split 24.65/25.92 to narrowly defeat Lorenzo Mora who touched just .03 later in 50.60. Christian Bacico bagged the bronze in 51.53.
Lamberti’s new career-best performance renders the 25-year-old Italy’s 6th-quickest performer of all time.
The women’s 200m IM saw 25-year-old Anna Pirovano dominate the field, getting to the wall well over a second ahead of her competitors.
Pirovano clocked a time of 2:07.93, her fastest by a second, to grab the title.
Sara Franceschi secured silver in 2:09.62 and Chiara Della Corte was the 3rd-place finisher in 2:10.31.
Finally, the men’s 100m breaststroke race saw Gabriele Mancini clear the 57-second barrier for the first time in his career.
Mancini struck gold in 56.89, beating his previous PB of 57.19 from just last week at the European SC Championships.
Stefano Saladini secured silver tonight in 57.49 and there was a tie for the bronze. Both Federico Rizzardi and Ludovico Blu Art Viberti finished simultaneously in 57.50 to share 3rd place honors.
Additional Notes
- Elena Capretta was too quick to catch in the women’s 100m freestyle, posting a gold medal-worthy time of 53.53. That held off Agata Maria Ambler who settled for silver just .20 behind in 53.73 as Viola Scotto Di Carlo rounded out the podium in 53.80.
- 23-year-old Capretta doubled up with another victory, this time in the women’s 50m fly. She turned in a time of 25.29 to get the job done, holding a slim advantage over national record holder Silvia Di Pietro. Di Pietro nabbed runner-up status in 25.46 with Costanza Cocconcelli also landing on the podium in 26.01, good enough for bronze.
