Day two of the 2025 Italian Short Course Championships brought about our first national record of the competition, with 30-year-old veteran Lisa Angiolini making her presence known in the women’s 200m breaststroke.
Angiolini stopped the clock at a rapid result of 2:18.96, a time which overwrote the former Italian standard of 2:19.17 Francesca Fangio put on the books over three years ago.
Tonight, Angiolini was the decisive victor, hitting the sole time of the field under the 2:21 barrier. Fangio was next to the wall in 2:21.01 followed by Lucrezia Mancini, who earned bronze in 2:22.41.
Split comparison:
| Angiolini’s New ITA Record – 2:18.96 | Fangio’s Old ITA Record – 2:19.17 |
| 31.32 | 31.88 |
| 1:06.86 | 1:06.40 |
| 1:42.75 | 1:42.23 |
| 2:18.96 | 2:19.17 |
Entering this competition, Angiolini’s lifetime best in this 2breast event rested at the 2:21.92 registered in March of last year. That means she hacked nearly 3 seconds off her former PB en route to making Italian history as the first-ever female to delve under the 2:19 threshold.
Angiolini missed this year’s European Short Course Championships due to battling bronchitis; however, her effort here would have earned her the bronze medalist in Lublin, Poland.
