Gose Grabs German Record, Quadarella Clocks Italian Mark In Women’s 800 Free Final

2025 EUROPEAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

On the books for 17 years, the women’s 800m freestyle European Short Course Championships record finally bit the dust, courtesy of Germany’s Isabel Gose.

Racing in the final tonight in Lublin, Poland, the 23-year-old Olympic medalist stopped the clock at a mighty feat of 8:01.90. That erased the longstanding meet record of 8:04.53 Italy’s Alessia Filippi established at the 2008 edition of this competition.

Gose was in the runner-up position through the 75m mark before she turned on the jets to lead the pack for the remainder of the race.

Her time not only notched the new meet record but it checked in as a monster lifetime best and German national record for the freestyle ace.

Her former PB and national benchmark had previously rested at the 8:05.42 logged en route to earning silver in this event at last year’s Short Course World Championships. Gose is now the 7th-best performer of all time in this SCM 800 freestyle.

Gose already claimed 400m free gold earlier at these Championships in a new European Record of 3:54.33.

Simona Quadarella of Italy was next to the wall in a time of 8:03.00 to notch a new national record as well.

26-year-old Quadarella’s outing this evening overtook the aforementioned time Filippi notched in 2008. But Quadarella’s performance here crushed her own previous career-best of 8:07.99 from when she bagged the bronze at the 2021 Short Course World Championships.

The women’s 800 freestyle was one of the most exciting races of the meet so far. Isabel Gose ultimately came out on top with a new Championship Record time of 8:01.90 which was just over a second faster than Simona Quadarella’s 2nd place swim of 8:03.00.

Gose and Quadarella were neck-and-neck through a majority of the race. At the 400 meter mark Gose sat in 1st at 4:00.81, just two tenths ahead of Quadarella’s 4:01.08.

Quadarella slowly began building from there, and at the 525 turn, the two women flipped in an exact tie of 5:17.28.

After that, Gose began a descend of her own through her 25 splits to slowly build a more significant lead. At the 600, she flipped in 6:02.74 to sit two tenths ahead of Quadarella 6:02.96.

Gose had a monster final 200 of 1:59.16, which was almost a second faster than Quadarella’s 2:00.04. She took down the 17-year-old record of 8:04.53 set by Alessia Fillippi in December of 2008.

Quadarella’s swim of 8:03.00 was a new Italian record, taking down the same 8:04.53 record from 2008.
