World Record holder in the 200 breast Caspar Corbeau of the Netherlands got sick last night with an “upper respiratory issue.” Despite the sickness, Corbeau still swam to a silver medal in the 200 breaststroke at the 2025 European Championships in Lublin, Poland.
Corbeau swam to a gold medal earlier this week in the 100 breaststroke, touching in a 55.85 during finals. He notably swam a lifetime best in prelims of the 100 breast with a 55.54. His time tonight in the 200 breast of a 2:01.27 was over a second off his lifetime best and World Record time of a 1:59.52 that he swam at the Toronto World Cup stop at the end of October.
This is not the first time he has battled illness during the second half of this year as he also fell ill twice in late August and early September.
Tonight’s swim marked Corbeau’s 3rd fastest performance ever as he also swam a 2:01.02 at the Belgian Championships at the start of November, coming off of his recent World Record.
He is scheduled to race in the 50 breaststroke which begins with prelims tomorrow morning. He is the top seed in the event.

Why make these types of excuses, it’s embarrassing
Tbf it’s one of the worst swimming illnesses… especially for an oxygen depleting event like a 200 breast. Adrenaline doesn’t help at all, you feel like you can’t breathe from the moment you dive in
