The first set of relays at the Short Course European Championships, the men’s and women’s 4×50 freestyle, saw a plethora of new national records.
A duo of relay lead-offs – Silvia di Pietro (Italy) and Luca Hoek (Spain) – scored two national records in one swim, individually in the 50 freestyle as well as the overall relay.
First, in the women’s event, di Pietro gave her home nation an early lead with a 23.39 lead-off. This slashed a .3 second chunk off her previous Italian record, which stood at 23.68 from the 2024 Short Course Worlds in Budapest. di Pietro then handed it off to Sara Curtis (22.90), Agata Maria Ambler (23.78), and Costanza Cocconelli (24.28) for a final time of 1:34.30, reaping the silver medal. This knocked over a second off Italy’s previous NR, which stood at 1:35.61 from the 2016 World Championships in Windsor. di Pietro also led off that relay.
The pool was then handed off to the men, where Spain’s Luca Hoek followed in di Pietro’s footsteps. Hoek produced a 21.09 lead-off to erase Rafael Muñoz’ supersuited record from 2009. Sergio de Celis (20.78), Carles Coll (20.77), and Miguel Perez-Godoy (21.30) swam the flying legs to place 5th in a time of 1:23.94, which beats the 1:24.65 NR they set this morning. This time was good enough for fifth place
Like Hoek, Croatia’s Jere Hribar also set a new national record from the supersuit era. Hribar’s 20.70 lead-off tied Duje Dragania’s nation best from 2009. The Balkan country went on to win bronze tonight.
Ukrainian Nikita Sheremet joined both di Pietro and Hoek in a double whammy of national records, which you can read about here.
