Nikita Sheremet cracked Kenzo Simons’ World Junior Record while leading off Ukraine’s record-setting relay tonight. The Louisville freshman clocked a time of 20.84 to take just over a tenth off Simons’ mark of 20.98 set in 2019.
Sheremet burst onto the scene over the summer, winning gold at the World Junior Championships in the 50 free after matching Michael Andrew’s record of 21.75 in the semi-finals. He has since started college at Louisville, where he has been on fire for the Cardinals with times of 18.92 in the 50 yard free and 42.04 in the 100 yard free.
His time tonight was a best by three-tenths of a second, and shaved 0.12 seconds from Andrii Govorov’s Ukrainian mark from 2016. Prior to today, his best stood at 21.55.

A similar swim later in the week could see him make his first senior final, and he looks well-placed to crack this record again before the week is out.
The fastest Junior swim in history belongs to Evgeny Sedov, who swam 20.70 as a relay leadoff at the World Short Course Championships in 2014. That swim came just days before World Aquatics began recognising World Junior standards, which they did from 01/01/2015. Sedov went on to split 20.37 as Russia set a new 4×50 free relay World Record of 1:22.60.
Ukraine broke their 4×50 free record for the second time today, taking more than two seconds off over the course of the day. They were 1:24.71 this morning to lower the mark of 1:26.09 from 2001, and shaved another eight-tenths off tonight as they placed 4th in 1:23.92.
World Long Course Champion from 2024 Vladylsav Bukhov was 20.75 on the third leg with Illia Linnyk splitting 20.96 on the second. Stepan Babenko was 21.37 on the anchor as they held off Spain for a top-four finish.

Luca Hoek 21.09 from 2008, 1 year younger, already dropped .4 in this meet
Some raw talent. Once he figures out yards, Louisville has a star on their hands.
If Andrii Govorov didn’t go to the enhanced games. Ukraine would have won this relay
They’ll be swimming ten lanes in prelims on Saturday morning (lanes 0-9) and Sheremet will be swimming in Lane 9 of the last heat, seeded with a 21.55.
Sheremet would be seeded 3rd with 20.84, although Jere Hribar led off Croatia’s relay with a 20.70.
The important thing though is that it looks like he’ll get three more big cracks to lower that WJR.
And Ralf Tribuntsov went 20.7
20.77 in the morning. Thanks for pointing it out, seeing it now.
