Josh Liendo on 47.6 100 Fly WR: “I would have been happy if I saw a 48.8”

2025 WORLD AQUATICS SWIMMING WORLD CUP – Toronto

Josh Liendo stunned everyone in the Toronto Pan Am Centre on night 1 of the World Cup, athletes and spectators alike. Not only did he win the 100 fly to crown bust Noe Ponti, but he broke Ponti’s world record from last year, touching .03 under the old mark in 47.68. Liendo admitted he wasn’t expecting to be that fast at this point in the season, especially with a goutee, but being in his home pool with a home crowd seemed to help.

He went 19.69 in the 50 fly and 18.68 in the 50 free today vs. Georgia. He is LOCKED IN.

I kinda have a theory it wasn’t a perfect swim but with Ponti and Kharun by his side and never further back then his hip they generated a wake that propelled then all to faster times then had it just been any of them individually crushing the field.

It frankly just doesn’t look the same as Ponti or Dressel’s swims. The eye also deceives and everything I just said could be bunk

My favorite swim of the series, well deserved WR. He’s been dynamite in yards. Never went to any short course worlds since joining Florida. Glad he was finally able to taper and show us what he can do in SCM.
