Duquesne & Davidson Women, George Mason Men Earn Head-To-Head Wins To Close Richmond Duals

Hampton, Va. – Backed by 26 total medals, the Duquesne University swimming and diving team wrapped up competition at the Richmond Duals on Saturday morning with a hard-fought 151–148 victory over the host Spiders in head-to-head action.

The Dukes collected seven gold medals on the final day of competition while securing 11 silvers and eight bronze.

Day two opened with the 200-yard medley relay, where the Duquesne team of sophomore Ashley Freel, senior Sydney Severini, sophomore Rachel Howard, and freshman Lucy Backus earned a runner-up finish with a time of 1:45.63. The Dukes also claimed third place in the event, as freshman Norah Kotnik, sophomore Jess Burns, freshman Emily Kyre, and sophomore Kaitlyn Connors touched the wall in 1:47.95.

In the 1650-yard freestyle, senior Aislinn Mooney claimed the silver medal with a time of 17:55.86. Junior Lexie Sundgren (1:53.79) and Freel (1:54.80) followed with second- and third-place finishes, respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle. Freel went on to strike gold in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.92, before securing another podium finish with a runner-up showing in the 200 IM at 2:07.60.

Sophomore Sierra Snow earned the Dukes’ first gold medal of the day, winning the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.93. In the same event, freshman Norah Kotnik claimed the bronze at 58.22. Snow continued her standout performance in the 200-yard backstroke, capturing another gold in 2:01.68, with Kotnik close behind for silver at 2:05.54. Snow capped off her impressive outing by collecting her third gold medal of the day in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 5:08.21. In the 100 breaststroke, Burns finished in third with a time of 1:06.30 while freshman Kira Schrecongost clocked in a time of 2:12.28 in the 200 butterfly to collected a bronze medal. The 50-yard freestyle followed with Backus adding a gold to her medal haul by touching the wall at 23.76.

OFF THE BOARDS
The Duquesne diving team registered a dominating performance off the boards on Saturday morning, taking the top three spots in both the one-meter and three-meter dives. In the one-meter, graduate student Lola Dragosavac secured the top spot with a final score of 244.35 while senior Ashley Felitsky followed behind in second with a score of 241.70. Sophomore Brianne Dempsey registered a final score of 227.20 to finish with the bronze.

In the three-meter, the Dukes continued its momentum, grabbing the top three spots. Felitsky captured the gold with a final score of 247.65 while Dempsey secured second with a 222.45 count. Dragosovac rounded out the top three spots by carding a score of 219.85.

QUOTABLE
“The divers made key improvements from the past weekend that proved to be beneficial” diving coach Alexa Gonczi said. “Overall, better performances all-around.”

“These two days are a tail of two swim meets,” head coach David Sheets said. “In the invitational format on Friday, I felt it was a total team effort in the pool and on the boards. In the dual meet format today, we had some really good performances in the pool but also had races that needed to be better. The divers had an outstanding two days and tons of credit goes to Alexa for helping us sneak by Richmond this morning.”

Backus continued her strong performance with a runner-up finish in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking in at 52.32. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Burns (2:22.46) and Severini (2:24.93) secured second- and third-place finishes, respectively. Later in the meet, Howard earned a silver medal in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing just behind teammate Freel. The Dukes closed out the afternoon with the 400-yard freestyle relay, as Snow, Connors, Howard, and Backus combined for a time of 3:30.15 to capture another silver medal.

UP NEXT
Duquesne will be idle until November, when it returns to Towers Pool for its home debut against Saint Peter’s on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 11:00 a.m. The diving team will also be in action that day, traveling to Clarion to compete in the Clarion Fall Invite at 12:00 p.m.

HAMPTON, Va. — Four Davidson Wildcats earned multiple event wins, and the Davidson women earned a team victory as well Saturday on the final day of the Richmond Duals at the Hampton Aquaplex.

On the team front, the Davidson women posted a 168-130 win over George Mason, while the men fell in a 157-140 tally.

Multiple wins came from Addison ConstantinidesDylan FeltElle Jacobsen and Lizzie Palmer.

HAMPTON, Va. – The George Mason men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams wrapped up competition at the Richmond Duals on Saturday, held at the Hampton Aquaplex in Hampton, Va.

The men’s team defeated Davidson, 157-140 and the women’s team fell to Davidson, 168-130.

On the men’s side, the Patriots won 11 events in their dual against the Wildcats.

Sophomore Ryan Serbia won three events on the day.  He touched the wall first in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.58), 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.21) and 200-yard IM (1:53.62).

Junior Cody Scifres won the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.92) with sophomore Gabriel Miller fifth (1:45.21).

Senior Tate Anderson won the 100-yard backstroke (49.52) with classmate Jett Lee third in the event (52.46).  The Patriots took the top two spots in the 100-yard freestyle, with Anderson first (44.77) and Miller second (46.98).

Junior Ian Rodgers recorded a first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (20.85) with junior Agustin Rasche fourth (21.66).  The Patriots claimed two of the top three spots in the 100-yard butterfly, with Rodgers first (49.04) and junior Colin Murtaugh third (50.93).

In the distance events, junior Alex Crown was third in the 1650-yard freestyle (16:34.30) and Scifres placed fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (4:58.19).

The Patriots swept the relay events.  In the 200-yard medley relay, the group of Rodgers, Serbia, Murtaugh and Anderson touched the wall first with a time of 1:31.42.  The combination of Anderson, Rodgers, Rasche and Miller won the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:02.42).

The Patriots finished one-two in the three-meter diving event with sophomore Caden Guy first (244.90) and junior Christian Anderson second (239.45).  Anderson won the one-meter event (267.60) while Guy placed third (235.50).

On the women’s side, the Patriots won four events against the Wildcats.

Freshman Sidney Kaufman won both the 100-yard backstroke (58.29) and 200-yard backstroke (2:07.13).

The Patriots took the top three spots in the 50-yard freestyle with senior Peyton Brehmer first (23.99), junior Hannah Magdeburg second (24.45) and senior Angelina Zeidan third (24.51).  Brehmer also won the 100-yard butterfly (57.59).  Zeidan also placed second in the 200-yard IM (2:10.64).

The Patriots went two-three in the 100-yard freestyle with Magdeburg second (53.45) and freshman Madelyn Abel third (53.54).  Abel finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.55).

In the 100-yard breaststroke, senior Ainsley Toews took second (1:06.94) while classmate Ally Yeary was fourth (1:10.31).  In the 200-yard Breaststroke, Toews was second (2:27.46) and junior Kristen Ivey third (2:27.74).

Junior Megan Anderson finished second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:12.98) with junior Sarah Dichak fourth (2:15.99).

In the distance events, freshman Alexis Brazier touched the wall second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:14.93) with Dichak right behind in third place (5:14.99), while Ivey placed sixth in the 1650-yard freestyle (18:24.43).

The combination of Brehmer, Abel, Magdeburg and Toews won the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:31.89).  The team of sophomore Greta Mott, Toews, Brehmer and junior Casey Tingen placed second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.09).

Junior Regan Mooney placed third (191.25) in the one-meter event and junior Lauren Hargnett placed fourth in the three-meter (198.20).

The Patriots are back in action when they travel to take on William & Mary on Saturday, Nov. 8 with the meet scheduled to begin at noon in Williamsburg, Va.

RICHMOND, Va. — The University of Richmond’s swimming and diving team notched several top-four finishes Saturday at the Richmond Duals, highlighted by four event wins despite a narrow 151-148 loss to Duquesne.

The Spiders opened strong as the A-relay of Caroline WeldonPresley BaberGabbie Primiano and Julia Krichev won the 200-yard medley relay at 1:45.16. Richmond’s 400 free relay of Baber, Krichev, Erin Budde and Lena Amare also won in 3:29.05, while the B-relay of Lydia SturgeonHannah WieczorekKaitlyn Bauer and Caitlyn Hughes placed third (3:36.66).

In the distance events, Natalie Stuart captured the 1,650 freestyle at 17:40.42, with teammate Carys Edgar placing fourth (18:15.49). The Spiders also claimed podium spots in the 500 free behind Kaitlyn Bauer (second, 5:08.47), Stuart (third, 5:11.17) and Edgar (fourth, 5:17.35).

Amare took the 200 free at 1:52.82 and later won the 100 free at 52.24, while Budde placed fourth in the 200. Baber (24.28) and Krichev (24.41) finished second and third in the 50 free.

Wieczorek (58.15) and Weldon (58.79) placed second and fourth in the 100 back. Primiano (1:04.50) and Baber (1:04.76) went one-two in the 100 breast, then Primiano added another win in the 200 breast (2:19.60).

Bauer (2:09.27) and MaryAgnes Smith (2:09.84) swept the top two spots in the 200 fly. In the 100 fly, Mia Gregory placed third and Budde finished fourth.

In diving, Tess Weatherhead led the Spiders with 198.30 points on the 1-meter board to take sixth, and 215.75 points on the 3-meter to place fourth.

Richmond returns to the pool on Friday, Nov. 7 to face Loyola in Baltimore, Md.
