Rebecca Meder Breaks Her Own African Record in 200m IM

2025 SWIMMING WORLD CUP – CARMEL

In the very last race of the meet, South African Rebecca Meder broke the African and South African Records in the 200 IM.

Meder swam 2:05.56 to finish 3rd in the race behind Britain’s Abbie Wood (2:05.14) and American Alex Walsh (2:04.76).

The swim shaved .05 seconds off her own record from December’s Short Course World Championships, where she placed 6th. Prior to that, the record belonged to Olympic Champion Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe, who swam 2:06.13 at the 2008 World Short Course Championships. Coventry is now the president of the IOC.

Splits Comparison:

Fly 26.88 26.88
Back 31.86 31.64
Breast 36.01 36.18
Free 30.86 30.86
Total Time 2:05.61 2:05.56

The splitting was stunningly similar to her record swim, including identical opening and closing splits and almost identical splits in between.

Meder has performed well all week, including a breakout performance in the 200 breaststroke, an event she has never really focused on, that almost broke an African Record. She placed 3rd in that race. Meder also holds an African Record in the 100 IM in short course, along with seven African Records in relays.

She currently ranks 15th in the overall series standings for points, which earns her $4,500. The top 20 men and top 20 women at each stop earn prize money ranging from $4,000 to $12,000, while the top 8 men and top 8 women in the overall series standings earn prize money ranging from $10,000 to $100,000.

Meder currently trains in New Zealand under South African coach Graham Hill.
