American Women Edge Out UMBC, Retriever Men Roll Past Eagles

WASHINGTON – With a thrilling win in the final relay of the night, the women’s team from American University swimming & diving pulled out its first win over UMBC in the three meetings between the schools since 2023. The final score had the women taking it 155-147, with both sophomore Marin Priddy and senior Isabel McGovern winning all four of their events. Priddy set a pool record for the Eagles with her win in the 100 breaststroke.

Overall, the women’s team captured wins in nine of 16 events, while the men’s team earned two wins for AU.

Notable Results

  • The women’s 200 medley relay started the night off with a win, as sophomore Piper Crosby, Priddy, McGovern, and sophomore Grace Gilbert teamed up for a win in 1:44.97, less than two-tenths of a second off the pool record and ranking 12th all-time at AU.
  • That same foursome brought it home at the end of the night, winning the 200 freestyle relay in 1:35.97 which also ties for 12th all-time. The group knew prior to the relay that the winning relay team would win the meet.
  • Priddy went 1:04.51 in the 100 breaststroke to set the pool record, with her time also ranking as a PR and sixth all-time at American. She got her fourth win and second individual victory in the 100 free with a time of 53.33.
  • McGovern’s two individual victories came in the women’s 200 free (1:53.87) and the 100 fly (57.25).
  • Crosby also earned an individual win with her time of 57.35 in the women’s 100 backstroke.
  • In addition to her two relay wins, Gilbert placed second in both the 50 free and 100 free.
  • The Eagles swept the 1,000 free on the women’s side, as sophomore Demetra Bicos (10:34.70), junior Kate Williams (10:40.78) and freshman Abby Rothrock (10:43.79) went 1-2-3 in that event.
  • For the men, sophomore Luke Martens won by six and a half seconds in the 1,000 free, going 9:47.52. He later placed second in the 500 free.
  • Sophomore Claire Mosher won the women’s 200 fly in 2:11.00 to round out the nine victories for her team.
  • The men’s team had a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 fly with sophomore Cole Coffman in first (1:55.02), junior Ryan Tiffany in second (1:58.24) and senior Madan Morris in third (2:01.76).
  • The Eagles’ best finish in the diving events came from freshman Alex Way who placed second on the 1-meter with a score of 221.50, ranking 15th all-time at AU. Way’s score of 222.60 on the 3-meter placed him third, and ranks 13th all-time.

Washington, D.C. — The trio of Ember StennettAlicia Buteau and Isabella Evers swept the podium in both diving events, while newcomer Alice Marini won a pair of events in her Retriever debut as the UMBC Women’s Swimming & Diving team opened the season on Friday night at American.

The Dawgs held a furious rally in the second half of the meet to overcome a big deficit, but American won the final relay to take the victory, 155-147.

Stennett (246.15), Buteau (230.32) and Evers (214.87) opened the meet with a clean sweep in the three meter, before the trio again went 1-2-3 in the one meter with Buteau (235.20) winning, followed by Stennett (220.65) and Evers (218.85).

Marini won both the 200 back (2:06.31) and the 200 IM (2:09.82), and took second in both the 100 back and as a member of the 200 medley relay.

Ashley Gutshall won the 50 free with a time of 24.10, while Breanna Smith (2:09.86), Ula Parrill (2:27.21) and Daphné Melis (2:27.99) took the top three spots in the 200 breaststroke. Kolby Reese was victorious in the 500 free in a time of 5:13.62.

Smith also took second in the 200 IM behind Marini, with ShannynLambert taking third.

The Retrievers host Navy and William & Mary next weekend at 11 a.m.

Washington, D.C. — The UMBC Men’s Swimming & Diving team won 14 of 16 events en route to a convincing 220-79 win over host American in its season-opener on Friday night in D.C.

Anders Logas won both diving events, scoring 259.35 in the three meter, and then scoring 256.20 to win by nearly 35 points in the one meter. Grant Moore took second in the three meter (249.67) and was edged by .10 in the one meter (221.40) to finish third.

The season started off with a bang as the quartet of freshmen Quinn MarchioniniBraden WeiseStefano Perez and sophomore Sean Neils set a pool record in winning the 200 medley relay (1:31.54).

Marchionini also won the 100 back (51.15) and the 200 back (1:55.30), he also took second in the 100 fly (51.01) behind classmate Matthew So (49.27).

So (1:40.67), Andrew McEachern (1:43.19) and Tyler Kay (1:45.48) took the top three spots in the 200 free, while Perez (52.54) and Nick Bracall (53.56) took second and third behind Marchionini in the 100 back.

Transfer Elliot Fielder won the 100 breaststroke in 58.76, before Weise (21.33), So (21.41) and Neils (21.46) went 1-2-3 in the 50 free. Weise (46.47) and Kay (47.55) earned gold and silver in the 100 free, and that was followed by Fielder (2:09.86) and James Tao (2:13.25) duplicating that effort in the 200 breaststroke.

Felipe Taveira Lira won the 500 free in 4:44.07, and then took first in the 200 IM in 1:54.65. Perez, Weise, So and Neils then closed the meet with a win in the 200 free relay, touching the wall in 1:25.21.

The Retrievers host Navy and William & Mary next Saturday at 11 a.m.
