For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Two-time Colorado high school state champion Barrett Kerrigan is set to compete for the United States Air Force Academy starting in the fall of 2026.

“I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the United States Air Force Academy! 🇺🇸 Thank you to my family, friends, coaches, and teammates who have supported me every step of the way. I’m so honored for the opportunity to serve my country while being part of such an incredible team.”

Kerrigan recently started his senior year at Cheyenne Mountain High School in Colorado Springs, where he has been a member of the school’s varsity swimming and diving team for the past three years. He also currently trains year-round with Pikes Peak Athletics and primarily specializes in mid-distance and distance freestyle, breaststroke and IM.

At the 2025 Speedo Sectionals – Austin, Kerrigan turned in a series of top performances. He placed 14th in the 1650 free (15:47.96), 16th in the 500 free (4:38.22), 22nd in the 1000 free (9:31.79) and 28th in the 400 IM (4:05.92), posting best times in all but the 500 free. Kerrigan also finished 30th in the 200 breast (2:08.60) after clocking a personal best time of 2:07.34 during prelims.

Kerrigan is a two-time state champion in the 500 free. He first won the title as a sophomore at the 2024 CHSAA Boys 4A State Championship, where he threw down a best time of 4:38.84 in the 500. He successfully defended his title at the 2025 State Championship, this time turning in a time of 4:35.60 to win by over three seconds. At the same meet, Kerrigan clocked a lifetime best in the 200 free (1:42.34) and the 100 free (48.53) as the lead-off on Cheyenne’s 400 free relay.

Kerrigan’s most recent competition was at the Futures Championship (LCM) in Justin in July, where he logged several new lifetime bests. He placed 4th in the 1500 free (16:25.92 – PB), 9th in the 400 free (4:06.54 – PB), 8th in the 400 IM (4:42.56 – PB) and 11th in the 200 breast (2:29.28 – SB). He also finished 16th in the prelims of the 200 free (1:57.47 – PB) but scratched out of finals in that event. This was one of the more lightly attended Futures locations.

A Division I Mid-Major program, the Air Force men will compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation this season. Last season, the Falcons were a part of the Western Athletic Conference, placing 3rd at the 2025 WAC Championships behind UNLV and California Baptist.

Last season, the MPSF only had two men’s teams after the resurgence of the Big West Conference took five men’s teams. In addition to the Air Force, three new men’s programs have been added to the MPSF for the 2025-2026 season: UNLV, University of Wyoming and California Baptist. The four new schools join Incarnate Word and Pacific in the conference this season.

With the top three teams from the 2025 WAC Championships now in the MPSF, we’ll take a look at how Kerrigan would have placed at last season’s WAC Championships. Based on his top times, Kerrigan would have landed in the ‘C’ final in the 200 and 500 free, 200 breast and 400 IM and would have been 15th in the 1650 free, giving him a strong chance at scoring some points at the MPSF Championships.

On the Falcons’ team itself, Kerrigan would have ranked 6th in the 500 free, 1000 free and 1650 free last season, as well as 7th in the 400 IM and 8th in the 200 breast. With another full season before Kerrigan arrives, it remains to be seen exactly how the Air Force roster and rankings will shake out.

Kerrigan is currently set to be joined in the pool by Sam Metzgar, Connor Dunker, Stanley Oka, John McGaughan and Luke Green, who should all make for strong training partners over their four years together.
