NCAA Qualifier Oscar Bilbao Transferring From Arizona State To Virginia Tech

Oscar Bilbao has announced he will transfer to Virginia Tech for the upcoming 2025-2026 season. Bilbao spent this past season at Arizona State.

The British native transitioned to short course yards well in his first season with the Sun Devils. He qualified for the 2025 NCAA Championships and swam in prelims of the 100 breast, 200 breast, and 200 IM. He posted a lifetime best 51.99 in the 100 breast to finish 33rd.

Bilbao helped the Sun Devil men capture the 2025 Big 12 title. He made the ‘A’ final of the 100 breast, 200 breast, and 200 IM with lifetime bests in all three events. He was 2nd in the 200 breast in a 1:52.31, 4th in the 100 breast (52.35), and 4th in the 200 IM (1:43.47).

Bilbao’s Best SCY Times Are:

  • 100 breast: 51.99
  • 200 breast: 1:52.31
  • 200 IM: 1:43.47

The Virginia Tech men finished 6th out of 15 teams at the 2025 ACC Championships and went on to finish 10th at the 2025 NCAA Championships. At ACCs, the team was led by fifth year Carles Coll Marti who scored 90 points including wins in the 200 breast and 200 IM. Coll Marti led the team in both events as well as the 100 breast with times of a 50.78 in the 100 breast, 1:48.89 200 breast, and a 1:39.52 200 IM.

Based on his best times, Bilbao is a huge addition for the Hokies, especially due to the graduation of Coll Marti. Bilbao’s best times in all three events would have been 2nd on the team behind Coll Marti this past season. With the top time in the 100 breast this upcoming season, Bilbao will also look to fill Coll Marti’s medley relay legs.

Bilbao’s best time in the 100 breast, 200 breast, and 200 IM are all on the border of the ACC ‘A’ and ‘B’ finals. Coll Marti was the only ‘A’ finalist for the team in all three events this past season. The team brings in two BOTR ranked recruits this fall with backstrokers Connor Johnson and Andy Roose highlighting the incoming high school class.

My 50-year-old brain just can’t process the below:

<Lifetime best 51.99 in the 100 BR finishes 33rd at NCAA’s>

It’s like we are in another universe.
