The 2025 Lake Erie Age Group and Senior LC Championships in Cleveland, held from July 24th to 27th, featured many blazing fast swims in the breaststroke category, a fitting end to what was the final event ever to be held by Lake Erie Swimming.

The standout performer of the meet was Blazing Barracuda’s Brayden Chen. Chen’s most impressive performance came in what was a fast heat for these championships, the boys’ 13-14 50 breaststroke, where three swimmers clocked top-100 times in their age group this year.

Chen won the event in 31.77. Lake Shore Swim Club’s Parker Gildea produced 32.57 to finish second, and Blazing Barracuda’s Thesath Wickramasinghe stopped the clock in 32.69 to place third. Each of those swims marked new personal bests and registered in the top 100 times in the boys’ 13-14 50 breast this year. Chen is now the 37th fastest performer this year after smashing his previous best of 32.18, a time that had him ranked 52nd. Gildea is 80th, entering the top 100 for the first time after obliterating his best time by two seconds. Wickramasinghe enters the top 100 in 91st after edging his lifetime best by twelve one-hundredths. Only two senior swimmers at the meet managed to clock faster times in the 50 breast than this trio.

Chen continued to put on a show in the boys’ 13-14 100 breaststroke, taking victory in 1:10.05, a half-second improvement from his previous best. The only swimmer at the meet to go faster than Chen was SwimUnited’s Christopher Saxon, notching 1:07.37 to take the boys’ 17-18 category.

The 200 breast was Chen’s most dominant performance. He won gold in the boys’ 13-14 category in 2:32.83, the fastest 200 breast swum at the meet by any swimmer in all age groups.

Chen is currently the 65th fastest performer this year in the boys’ 13-14 100 breast (1:09.73) and ranks 34th this year in the boys’ 13-14 200 breast (2:29.55). Both of those swims were lifetime bests clocked at the 2025 Central Zone East Sectionals.

Firestone Akron Swim Team’s Chase Kleinschmidt also had a dominant meet, sweeping the backstroke events in the boys’ 11-12 age group and taking the 50 breast to boot. He produced a time of 31.69 in the 50 back, becoming the 51st fastest 11-12 year old in the event this year. He took the 100 back in 1:10.50, the 200 back in 2:40.15, and the 50 breast in 38.14, clocking personal bests in each event.

Lakeshore Aquatic Club’s Nina La Rosa, 20, threw down in the 19 & over breaststroke events, recording a personal best in every distance. She clocked 2:40.42 in the 200 breast, a time that was good enough for gold but paled in comparison to her times in the 100 and 50. She won the 100 in 1:10.57, which is the 38th fastest 100 breaststroke swum by an American woman this year. La Rosa took victory in the 50 as well, blazing to 31.86, making her the 87th fastest female 50 breaststroker in the world this year.

These championships mark the end of an era. Lake Erie Swimming (LESI) will officially merge with Ohio Swimming on September 1st of this year, forming a new LSC that will operate under the name Ohio Swimming. This meet was the last meet on the LESI event schedule before September 1st, meaning that the event is the last to ever be held under the Lake Erie Swimming name.
