This morning’s Speedo Winter Junior National Championships – East prelims session saw Yi Zheng continue to march up the boys’ 15-16 all-time event rankings, this time in the 200 IM.
The Carmel Swim Club swimmer stopped the clock in a time of 1:43.98, bettering his previous best by 2.48 seconds and earning the top seed in a field full of 17- and 18-year-old swimmers. His time makes him the 7th fastest 15-16-year-old boy in the event of all-time.
Splits
| Lap | Time |
| 50 (Fly) | 22.88 |
| 100 (Back) | 26.32 (49.20) |
| 150 (Breast) | 29.87 (1:19.07) |
| 200 (Free) | 24.91 (1:43.98) |
The performance is a continuation of what has been a breakthrough second half of the year for Zheng. He broke into the top ten all-time in the long course boys’ 400 IM at U.S Nationals in June, and quickly bettered his all-time rank in the event to 7th in late July. He continued to drop heaps of time in November and recorded eight personal bests at the CSC Fall Frenzy, where he clocked the 11th fastest short course 400 IM in the history of the boys’ 15-16 age group.
Zheng came into the meet seeded 7th in the 200 IM, a little over two seconds removed from the top seed. He is similarly seeded in other events he is scheduled to swim later in the meet.
Zheng is seeded 5th in the 200 breast (1:56.44) and 6th in the 200 fly (1:45.30). In both events, he is within one-and-a-half seconds of the top seed. Zheng is seeded 2nd in the 400 IM and currently sits 4.17 seconds behind top seed Baylor Stanton. As he has in the 200 IM, Zheng could become a serious contender in these events if he can put together similar improvements.
Zheng will also be competing in the 100 breast, where he is seeded 24th with a time of 55.08.
The field of the 200 IM going into finals is extremely tight. Behind Zheng sits Baylor Stanton (2nd, 1:44.21), Collin Holgerson (3rd, 1:44.53), Ian Heysen (4th, 1:44.90), and Owen Ekk (5th, 1:45.06), all of whom are within 1.08 seconds of Zheng.
