Within the first hour of action at the Pro Swim Series in Indianapolis, 16-year-old Yi Zheng threw down a major career best to climb the 15-16 National Age Group rankings in the 200 IM, touching in 1:59.65, the 3rd fastest time ever in the age group, and 2nd fastest time of the prelims.
Zheng, a class of 2027 recruit from nearby Carmel, Indiana, who is committed to Stanford, came into the meet with a career-best in the 200 IM of 2:01.35 from last July’s Speedo Junior National Championships. In these prelims, he was one of just three swimmers to dip under the 2:00 mark, trailing only Kieran Smith in 1:59.37, and touching just ahead of Cal’s Ryan Erisman in 1:59.93.
Prior to this swim, Zheng sat just inside the top 10 all-time in the 15-16 NAG rankings with his 2:01.35. By breaking 2:00, he becomes only the 5th swimmer ever in the age group to do so, and jumps him all the way up to #3 in the NAG rankings, just behind Maximus Williamson in 1:58.65 and Carson Foster in 1:59.45.
