Mary-Sophie Harvey Left Off Canadian 4×200 Free Relay As She Deals With Shoulder Injury

2025 World Championships

Given her busy schedule and Canada’s thin chances at a medal, it wasn’t shocking to see Summer McIntosh absent from the final of women’s 4×200 freestyle relay on Thursday at the World Championships Singapore, but it was eyebrow-raising to see another key name, Mary-Sophie Harvey, missing.

Harvey is reportedly dealing with a shoulder injury, according to CBC‘s Devin Heroux.

Harvey’s injury and McIntosh having the 200 fly final earlier in the session, plus the 400 IM and 800 free later in the meet, ultimately resulted in the Canadian coaches keeping the same lineup as the prelims in the 4×200 free relay final.

Harvey, who was 4th in the women’s 200 free at last summer’s Olympics and won silver in the event at the 2024 Short Course World Championships, had a strong start to the championships by winning bronze in the women’s 200 IM on Monday, her first individual medal at a major international long course meet.

She then placed 15th in the women’s 200 free on Monday, clocking 1:57.72 in the heats and then 1:58.57 in the semis, more than three seconds off her personal best (1:55.29) and nearly two seconds shy of what she went last month at the Canadian Trials (1:56.60).

On Thursday morning, she raced the heats of the women’s 200 breaststroke, narrowly missing a berth in the semi-finals by placing 17th in 2:26.95, more than three seconds slower than the lifetime best she set at the Trials (2:23.40).

Harvey has one more individual entry on her schedule, the 400 IM, which will run on Sunday, the final day of competition.

Without McIntosh and Harvey, the Canadian quartet of Brooklyn DouthwrightSienna AngoveElla Cosgrove and Ella Jansen placed 6th in the women’s 4×200 free relay in a time of 7:52.52.

American here- very sorry to hear this. I have always admired MSH’s perseverance, and it seems like she has reached a higher level recently. Hope she has a speedy and full recovery.
