Men’s and Women’s 10k Postponed Again Due to Water Quality Concerns

2025 World Championships

World Aquatics has further postponed the 10k races at the World Championships due to ongoing concerns with the water quality.

The organization confirms that the results have improved, but are still above the threshold of acceptable quality.

“World Aquatics, in coordination with the Singapore 2025 Organising Committee, confirms that while water quality results have improved, the Women’s 10km and Men’s 10km open water swimming events at the World Aquatics Championships – Singapore 2025 will not take place on the morning of 16 July 2025 due to water quality levels exceeding acceptable thresholds outlined in the World Aquatics competition regulations.”

The events, that were originally supposed to start at 8:00 a.m. local time on July 16th (8:00 p.m EST), have been pushed back five hours and will now start at 1:00 p.m pending further review of the water collected at 8:00 p.m. local time. These results are expected by the morning of July 16th.

This is the 2nd time the women’s race has been delayed, after it was originally supposed to occur at 8:00 a.m. on July 15th, but the water quality test surpassed the thresholds outlined in the World Aquatics regulations.

Updated Schedule:

  • Wednesday, July 16 – Men’s 10km at 13:00 SGT (1:00a.m. EST) / Women’s 10km at 16:00 SGT (4:00a.m. EST)
  • Thursday, July 17 — Regularly Scheduled Day Off
  • Friday, July 18 – Men’s 5km at 7:30am SGT (7:30pm EST) / Women’s 5km at 10:00am SGT (10:00am EST)
  • Saturday, July 19 – Men’s and Women’s 3km Knockout Sprint at 7:00am SGT (7:00pm EST)
  • Sunday, July 20 – Mixed 4x1500m Relay at 7:00am SGT (7:00pm EST)

Update 7/15- 8 p.m. EST

The water quality is in acceptable ranges and the open water 10k races will proceed as planned at 1:00 p.m (men) and 4:00 p.m. (women) local time.

Open water swimmers are always treated as B level swimmers.
Why not separate the locations for the pool and open water events? Hold the open water competition in a reliable country with good water quality and suitable temperatures. Allow enough time for swimmers competing in both open water and pool to adjust to the pool location afterwads.
Pretty simple.

too much testing! Stop testing and the water will be just fine!

At this rate, Weinstein will be able to swim after all if they push it back far enough

Why use “water quality” if they mean “water temperature”, or is it both? (high temps lead to greater bacterial growth). Why not specifically state what the issue is? This seems like a deliberate attempt to be vague and mislead people!
