World Aquatics Postpones Women’s 10K Open Water Race At Worlds Due to Water Quality Concerns

2025 World Championships

World Aquatics announced just minutes ago that they are postponing tomorrow morning’s women’s 10k open water event at the Singapore World Championships. The race was scheduled to begin at 8am local time at Palawan Beach, Sentosa—8pm Eastern time tonight in the United States.

The postponement was due to bacteria levels, not the warmer water temperature, though that has also been of high concern over the past few days. In the official statement, World Aquatics wrote, “The Women’s 10km event was originally scheduled to take place on 15 July 2025 at 8:00 a.m. Following a review involving representatives from World Aquatics, the Singapore 2025 Organizing Committee, the World Aquatics Sports Medicine Committee, and the World Aquatics Open Water Swimming Technical Committee, the decision was made to postpone the race in the utmost interest of athlete safety.

“While testing in recent days has consistently shown water quality at the venue to meet World Aquatics’ acceptable thresholds, analysis of samples taken on 13 July surpassed these thresholds. The decision to postpone racing was made in the best interests of athlete health and safety, which remains World Aquatics and the Singapore 2025 Organizing Committee’s top priority.

“Subsequent water samples and water quality review sessions will continue to take place at the competition venue, during which World Aquatics and the Singapore 2025 Organizing Committee will determine whether conditions are safe to proceed with the event on a later date.

“World Aquatics regrets the inconvenience caused by the postponement and acknowledges the commitment and preparation of all athletes, coaches, and teams. The health and safety of participants remain the highest priority in all competition-related decisions.”

The organization has publicized an updated schedule for the open water events, with both the men’s and women’s 10k races now scheduled for tomorrow. The men’s 10k will take place at 7:30am Singapore time, followed by the women’s 10k at 10:15am Singapore time, with all other events remaining unchanged.

  • Wednesday, July 16 – Men’s 10km at 7:30am SGT (7:30pm EST) / Women’s 10km at 10:15am SGT (10:15pm EST)
  • Friday, July 18 – Men’s 5km at 7:30am SGT (7:30pm EST) / Women’s 5km at 10:00am SGT (10:00am EST)
  • Saturday, July 19 – Men’s and Women’s 3km Knockout Sprint at 7:00am SGT (7:00pm EST)
  • Sunday, July 20 – Mixed 4x1500m Relay at 7:00am SGT (7:00pm EST)

As a Singaporean (who also happens to be volunteering at the event), I legit thought the biggest threat to the open water event was gonna be CAT1 (lightning alert), not because someone took an enormous crap in our waters…

The water temperature is apparently 29.2-29.7 C today, but the data point is from a single beach.

That’s 85 degrees Fahrenheit for those of us for whom that scale is used – rather hot. Perhaps planning for open water needs to consider holding championships in cooler regions rather than just using the pool swim licale.

one positive out of all of this is teaching americans the kelvin scale of measuring temperature.

I’m afraid we are way too complacent and disinterested to learn Celsius, much less Kelvin. I’ll bet 25% of those of us in the US don’t know if 100m or 100yd is longer

World Aquatics called an urgent meeting of OW team leaders this afternoon. The whole OW thing is under uncertainty.

My husband is there as an official. They have been concerned about the water temps since last week. It was supposed to rain so they were hopeful the water temp would be below 31c. World Aquatics does not do a combined water/ air temp test like USA swimming does (63c is the max). If they did, today’s thresholds may have been met (it’s currently 28c air temp). I really hope it’s safe for them to get these races in this week!

Yeah I thought the weather yesterday and today is perfect, quite cooling with plenty of clouds and without rain. I guess the water retain heat longer than the air.

Sounds like it was micro organism count and not water temps – didn’t get the actual scoop – but think it might be E. coli counts.

This wasn’t about water temp

It’s about water temp, (nothing to do with poop) it has been close to 31c water temp for days but just tipped over the max allowed so it has to be postponed. Fingers crossed for cooler temps tomorrow.

Not true.

The opposite. The water temp was fine. It was E. coli in the water.
