The 2025 Austin Sectionals got underway today with a number of strong performances posted on day one.

Jacob Bougaieff of Dads Club Swim Team shone in the 200 breast, as he shaved .23 off of his lifetime best to take 3rd in 2:18.17 and posted the 6th-fastest time in the boys’ 15-16 200 breast this season. The 16-year-old bumped himself up two spots on the national ranking, as he previously sat at #8 thanks to his recent performance at the Canadian Swimming Trials (2:18.40).

In addition to climbing the ranking of top times this season, Bougaieff also moved up the all-time lists; his swim lands him at #84 on the  all-time top 100 ranking in the 15-16 age group.

Charging into the wall ahead of Bougaieff was Marcus Otero of Southwest Aquatic Team  and Guatemalan swimmer R0berto Bonilla of  Texas A&M. Otero threw down a lifetime best time of 2:17.07 to drop over 1.5 seconds and win the event, while Bonilla took the runner-up spot in 2:17.37, a few seconds off of his best (2:14.34).

Streamline Aquatics’ Evan Croley turned in an impressive race in the 100, logging his first-ever sub-50 performance in the event. He claimed the championship title in 49.93, knocking exactly half a second off of his previous best time. Croley, who will enter his second season at Harvard in the fall, was the only competitor in the field under 50 seconds; he narrowly beat out Stepan Goncharov and Cooper Lucas, who tied for 2nd in 50.20.

Competition on the girls’ side of the meet got off to a more subdued start. Austin Swim Club’s Ella Mongenel made a splash in the 100 free, turning in a massive personal performance to kick off her weekend of racing.

Mongenel placed 4th in 56.24, dropping .95 from her previous best time that she set back in July 2023 and launching herself up the season’s national rankings. The University of Texas commit came into the meet ranked 50th with a 57.38 in the girls’ 17-18 100 free; her performance tonight marks the 17th-fastest time in the country this season.

The women’s 100 free also saw familiar names such as Lillie Nesty and Chloe Stepanek, who went 1-2 and turned in times of 55.37 and 55.52, respectively.
