Mexico will bring nine swimmers to the upcoming World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.
There has been much uncertainty surrounding the Mexican roster after former president of the Federation of Mexican Swimming, Kiril Todorov, became embroiled in an embezzlement scandal in 2024. The scandal caused World Aquatics to revoke its recognition of the organization.
A new Mexican Swimming Federation was founded, as required by World Aquatics, but there were questions over whether the organization would receive recognition in time for the World Championships in Singapore. This led to fears Mexican athletes would have to compete under a neutral flag.
Those fears were quelled when the psych sheet for the meet was released, showing that nine swimmers are set to represent Mexico at the World Championships.
The roster is highlighted by Miranda Grana, who dropped a slew of personal bests and a national record at the 2025 Mexican Nationals in April. Her 1:00.02 in the 100 back made her the fastest Mexican woman in history and seeds her 17th in the event at Worlds. Like most of Mexico’s team, Grana trains in the United States, with her base being at Indiana University.
She is joined on the team by another collegiate All-American, Celia Pulido, who trains at Southern Illinois University. Because she didn’t have an “A” cut in the 100 back, Mexico was unable to send her alongside Grana in that event, but Pulido will swim the 50 back and 50 fly individually.
Grana will also be swimming the women’s 200 back and 100 fly in Singapore, where she is seeded 27th and 35th, respectively. Grana swims for Indiana University under Ray Looze.
The team also features Jorge Iga, who is seeded 16th in men’s the 200 free with a time of 1:46.32. He is also entered in the 100 free, seeded 23rd, and the 100 fly, seeded 37th.
Other notable swimmers include Miguel De Lara Ojeda, the Mexican National Record holder in the men’s 100 and 200 Breast, and Byanca Rodriguez Villanueva, the National Record holder in the women’s 50 and 100 Breast.
Mexico has never won a medal in swimming at the World Aquatics Championships, though their diving squad is one of the world’s best. In 2024, at a World Championship with limited participation, the country’s best individual finish was an 11th from Maria Matta Cocco in the women’s 200 fly.
