SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — South Dakota swimming and diving team celebrated its 16 seniors on Saturday during a Senior Day ceremony ahead of the completion of the two-day Coyote Invitational held inside Midco Aquatic Center.
The morning ceremony proceeded a three-session final day to the meet as some of the seniors were competing in a Coyote uniform for the final time.
The men’s and women’s teams combined for 23 top three finishes on Saturday which included five first-place efforts, seven runner-up finishes and 11 third-place finishes in individual events.
Gabbie Ahrendt, Mady Schmidt, Charlie Matthews, Teague Bates and Alex Parkinson secured race victories during the final day of competition.
Ahrendt, a sophomore, won the 400 IM, for her second win of the meet, while she was also third in the 100 IM.
Schmidt, a junior, won the one-meter diving competition with a 235.95 point total for her second individual win of the season while she also placed second on the three-meter board with a 237.30.
Matthews, a sophomore, had a personal best 275.80 on the one-meter board to capture his eighth individual win of the season. He finished second on the three-meter board with a 251.10.
Bates, a redshirt freshman, earned his first collegiate victory with his personal best 258.70 on the three-meter board. He was second on the one-meter board with a 254.45.
Parkinson, a freshman, led a 1-2 finish in the 1650 free where he clocked 16:04.35 while junior Matthew Sorbe touched in 16:37.61.
Jacob Carlson (100 fly), Madeline Schrank (200 fly) and Nick Rounds (100 back) also swam to runner-up finishes.
Grace Schultz, a junior, had a trio of third-place efforts, in the 100 back, 200 back and 400 IM.
Nellie Dalsin, a freshman, placed third in both diving events while Jackson Nedved, a sophomore, was third in the 100 breast and 200 breast.
Taylor Horan (200 free), Parker Sonnabend (100 IM) and Joaquin Contreras-Fallico (200 fly) also earned third-place finishes.
South Dakota has one final tune-up meet, next week’s Minnesota First Change Meet, before the Summit League Championships, which run Feb. 19-22 in Iowa City, Iowa.

SIOUX FALLS — The South Dakota State women’s swimming and diving team opened the second and final day of the Coyote Invitational by winning the 200-yard medley relay, then received individual wins later on Saturday from Gigi Hioki, Braylynn Moore and Anna Mei Castro to wrap up their final regular season competition of the season.
The quartet of Jenna Currier, Emma Schultz, Isabella Gnewuch and Hioki combined for a winning time of 1 minute, 44.23 seconds to claim the 200 medley relay. Hioki would go on to claim the final individual title of the night in the 200 butterfly, 2:05.46, and also placed second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.15 seconds.
Teammate Poppy Mead placed third in the 200 fly, 2:09.85, and fourth in the 100-yard race, 58.32 seconds.
Moore was one on only two competitors — both Jackrabbits — in the 1,650 freestyle and touched the wall first in 18:31.23. Schultz was second in 19:59.77 and added a third-place time of 1:06.37 in the 100 breaststroke.
Currier contributed a fourth-place showing in the 200 breaststroke, 2:28.06.
Castro, meanwhile, turned in a strong day in the diving well, winning the 3-meter competition with 239.95 points and taking second on the 1-meter board with a score of 221.30 points.
No team scores were recorded in the meet held at the Midco Aquatic Center.

SIOUX FALLS – Freshman Nik Keuser’s sweep of the breaststroke events was highlighted by a school-record in the 100-yard race as the South Dakota State men’s swimming and diving team wrapped up competition Saturday at the Coyote Invite.
A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Keuser clocked a winning and SDSU-record time of 55.06 seconds in the 100 breaststroke, eclipsing the previous record of 55.11 seconds set by Wyatt Rumrill in 2019.
Keuser ran away with the 200 breaststroke title as his nearest competitor was nearly seven seconds behind his winning time of 2 minutes, 1.39 seconds. That mark also puts Keuser in the No. 3 spot in the event in program history.
Kolden Kringen also was a two-time winner for the Jackrabbit men, who combined to win eight event titles in the two-day, unscored meet at Midco Aquatic Center.
After winning the 200 individual medley in Friday’s opening session, Kringen posted victories in both the 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly on Saturday. First, he led a Jackrabbit sweep of the top three spots in the 200 freestyle in which the trio were separated by a mere .08 seconds. Kringen recorded a winning time of 1:42.69, followed by Cody Vertin in 1:42.70 and Braxton McGrath in third at 1:42.77.
A sophomore from Williston, North Dakota, Kringen later won the 200 fly in 1:53.36 for his third title of the meet.
Vertin claimed an individual title of his own in the 100 IM, posting a top time of 51.81 seconds, with Kringen placing fourth in 52.76 seconds. It was the second title of the weekend for Vertin, who swam his way to victory in the 500 freestyle on Friday.
Also victorious for the Jackrabbits on Saturday was Aiden Carstensen, who notched a time of 49.96 seconds to win the 100 backstroke. Carstensen added a runner-up finish in the 100 freestyle in 46.61 seconds.
McGrath turned in his second third-place finish of the day in the 1,650 freestyle, logging a time of 16:42.73. Braeden Glor also contributed a third-place showing in the 200 backstroke, 1:55.62.
SDSU also received a pair of third-place finishes in the diving events. Oscar Francis placed third on the 1-meter board with a season-best 214.35 points, while freshman Seth Berens took third in the 3-meter competition by scoring 230.60 points over six dives.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — With just a few short weeks to go until the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Championships, the UNI swimming and diving team showed out in its final two meets of the regular season this weekend, capturing six event titles at the Coyote Invite, while also putting on a strong showing at the Omaha Diving Invite.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers’ swimming competition kicked off on Friday night as the 200-yard free relay team of Abby Lear, Morgan Meyer, Hannah Nedder and Elyse Brayton placed second (1:36.06), with the quartet of Faith Larsen, Waren Graeve, Natalie Harris and Ema Lavigne earning fourth (1:36.54).
Olivia Chambers grabbed second place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:06.62 as Nikki Walters followed closely behind in fifth (2:09.83). Two-time defending MVC champion Larsen would come out on top in the 50-yard freestyle with a winning time of 23.67, while Lear captured third (24.02).
Day two of action at the Midco Aquatic Center saw Brayton, Lavigne, Larsen and Meyer take second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:45.92) as Lear, Jenna Breitbach, Nedder and Graeve finished fourth (1:48.01). Walters picked up the second win of the weekend for Northern Iowa in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.91, while Abby Steward claimed third (58.10) and Lavigne fifth (58.51).
Chambers and Harris dominated in the 200-yard freestyle, capturing the top two spots on the podium with times of 1:53.70 and 1:53.75, as Larsen clinched second place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.03. Brayton took second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.80, with Steward following in third at 57.97 and Lear in fifth (58.31).
Larsen came out on top in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 57.52 seconds, followed by Lavigne close behind in second (57.84). Chambers and Pallett fourth earned fifth places respectively with times of 59.68 and 1:00.00, as Meyer took the top prize in the 200-yard backstroke with a winning time of 2:04.62. Rolow and McCorkle followed in seventh (2:09.90) and eighth place (2:10.31).
Walters found her way back to the top of the podium in the 200-yard backstroke with a winning time of 2:26.44 as Aspen Cole placed fifth in the event (2:29.13). In the 100-yard freestyle, Harris placed fourth with a time of 53.84, while Sam Oeltjen took fourth place in the 200-yard butterfly (2:11.62) to close out the night.
Down at the H&K Pool in Omaha, diving competition began for the Panthers on the one-meter boards on Friday night with Erica Peters placing second with a score of 251.55, followed by Avery Hogan in fourth (239.60), Trista Thompson in sixth (232.60) and Abby Hutchins in eighth (224.05). In the three-meter competition on Saturday afternoon, Hogan took second place after scoring a 259.20. Peters followed Hogan in fourth (257.15) with Hannah Taylor earning sixth place (248.60).
