LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas women’s swimming and diving team posted 16 first-place finishes on its way to a 168-69 route versus Rockhurst on Saturday afternoon at Robinson Natatorium.
The Jayhawks claimed first place in every event possible against Rockhurst and totaled 168 points on the afternoon after taking a two-week break from competition following the team’s midseason invite in November.
“It was a good way to end the calendar year with how we competed,” Kansas head coach Clark Campbell said. “It is especially challenging after having a really good midseason meet two weeks ago and having Thanksgiving break. We had a number of people that were better than they were at our midseason meet. We had some lifetime bests, so it was a really good effort all the way around. Today was a good way to take some momentum into the new year and into Big 12s.”
The meet kicked off with the 200 medley relay which was won by the relay team of Lydia Lafferty, Izzy Satterlee, Eleni Kotzamanis and Claire Hyatt with a time of 1:43.22. The 1,000 free followed and resulted in another Kansas win, this time for Addi Barnes who raced a time of 10:31.48. Gabi Dyer was next on the podium for Kansas in the 200 free, finishing on top with a time of 1:52.40.
Carrying the Jayhawk momentum was Lezli Sisung, who took first place in the 100 back at 55.37, nearly five seconds ahead of second place (1:00.29). Ryan Johnston then swam a time of 1:02.33 to place first in the 100 breast, and Anna Gearhart raced a time of 2:03.29 to finish in first for the 200 fly.
Hyatt was able to pick up two more first-place finishes for Kansas, notching back-to-back top finishes in the 50 free (23.73) and the 100 free (52.40). Logan Morris swam a time of 2:02.01 to claim first in the 200 back, while Aidan Howze followed suit with a swim of 2:22.36 in the 200 breast, also finishing in first.
The 500 free then belonged to Jayhawk Gracyn O’Mara, who raced a time of 5:06.92. Lafferty was back on top of the podium, this time in the 100 fly with a time of 54.29.
Sisung tabbed another win with her top finish in the 200 IM (2:08.78), and the Jayhawks wrapped up their dominant showing with a first-place finish in the 200 free relay. The team of Ellie Howe, Hyatt, Izzy Porter and Maggie Moore claimed first in the event with a time of 1:34.71.
