CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – On senior day and at its final home meet of the 2013-14 season, the MIT men’s swimming and diving team defeated Amherst College by a score of 185-115. This is the third year in a row that the Engineers have come out on top in a meet against the Lord Jeffs. Six different MIT swimmers picked up wins throughout the day, with sophomoreThomas Norris (Cincinnati, Ohio) leading the way with his three individual victories.
To start the day, the Engineers took first and third place in the 200-yard medley relay, taking a 13-4 lead over the Lord Jeffs right from the start. MIT’s A relay touched in first place with a 1:32.73, splitting over half a second faster than what it went last night against Williams College. Amherst was second with a 1:35.32 and Tech’s B relay followed hundredths of a second later in third place with a time of 1:35.55.
Norris touched first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a 9:48.83, swimming almost the same exact time that earned him a win against Tufts last weekend. Freshman John Matthews (Yorktown, Va.) came in third in 9:57.08. Just three events later, Norris went on to win the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:53.61, out-touching Jeff Anderson of Amherst by just over a tenth of a second, and then, later on in the day, also won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:48.34, finishing just two-tenths of a second ahead of Amherst’s Parker Moody.
Senior Remy Mock (Victoria, British Columbia) won the 200-yard freestyle by two seconds with his time of 1:43.74 and, in the 100-yard backstroke, sophomore Bo Mattix (La Canada, Calif.) returned to the top with a 51.17. Liao improved his time in the 100-yard breaststroke from last night by two full seconds, coming in first with a 55.31. A few events later, he also won the 200-yard breaststroke, touching with a time of 2:00.84, almost nine full seconds ahead of the second place finisher. He has finished first in both the 100 and 200 breast at every meet he has swum those events at so far this season. Following behind him in the 100 breast were freshman Alexander Luh (San Jose, Calif.) in third in 58.77 and junior Ben Bauchwitz (Hershey, Pa.) in fourth place with a 1:00.39.
As they did last night, juniors Austin Fathman (Hamilton, Mich.) and Brendon Chiu (Monterey Park, Calif.) came in first and second in the 50-yard freestyle, both dropping a few hundredths of seconds of their times. Fathman led with his 21.31 and Chiu followed just one one-hundredth of a second later with a 21.32. Sophomore Ory Tasman (Orlando, Fla.) touched in third in 21.91. Classmate Daryl Neubieser (Saratoga, Calif.) led the way in the 100-yard freestyle with his time of 47.01, while Fathman was second in 47.46.
On the other side of the bulkhead, senior Danil Tyulmankov (Stamford, Conn.) placed third on the 3-meter diving board with a score of 261.90 and freshman Harry Lubowe (Laguna Hills, Calif.) was fifth with 213.07. Later on in the meet, on the 1-meter board, Tyulmankov was fourth with a 261.60 and Lubowe finished fifth with a score of 211.95.
In the 200-yard backstroke, Mattix started out ahead of Conor Deveney, but ultimately came in second place, touching with a time of 1:53.21. Classmates Sean Corcoran (Huntersville, N.C.) and Alex Lednev (Glenmont, N.Y.) took third and fourth with times of 1:56.05 and 1:56.69 respectively. Corcoran also finished in second place in the 100-yard butterfly with a 50.96, finishing ahead of classmate Luke Schlueter (St. Louis, Mo.), who came in third with a 51.86. Lednev would go on to win the 200-yard Individual Medley with a 1:55.41.
To wrap up this fast-paced, aggressive meet, the MIT 400-yard freestyle A relay touched in first place with a 3:08.34, finishing almost four seconds ahead of Amherst’s A relay. MIT’s B relay was third in 3:12.44 and the C relay was fifth with a time of 3:18.11.
Next up for the Engineers will be the Wheaton Invitational, which will take place from Friday through Saturday, Feb. 7-8. The next time MIT will race after that will be at the NEWMAC Championships, set to take place from Thursday, Feb. 20 through Sunday, Feb. 23 at WPI.
