We entered the final day of action at the first stop of the 2024 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Shanghai, China. Among the last session’s activities were the men’s 400m IM and 200m free, events which saw New Zealand’s Lewis Clareburt knock down national records in each.
First, in the men’s 400m IM, Clareburt powered his way to the wall in a time of 4:05.03 to capture the bronze.
Winning the race was Olympic champion and reigning LCM World Record holder Leon Marchand of France who touched in 4:00.03 followed by Italian national record holder Alberto Razzetti who nabbed silver in 4:01.51.
As for 25-year-old Clareburt, the Club37 swimmer’s result represents a new lifetime best, destroying his previous PB of 4:07.47 nabbed at the 2020 New Zealand Short Course Championships.
Clareburt’s effort also crushed the previous Kiwi standard, a mark of 4:06.66 Dean Kent put on the books over 20 years ago at the 2003 World Cup in Berlin, Germany.

Then in the 200m free, the final race of the night on the men’s side, Clareburt did further damage to the record books.
Although he fell short of the podium, finishing in 6th place, Clareburt’s time of 1:43.21 checked in as a new lifetime best and national standard.
Entering this competition, Clareburt’s career-quickest sat at the 1:44.26 he registered at the aforementioned 2020 New Zealand Short Course Championships. The Commonwealth Games champion dropped that down to 1:44.01 during this morning’s heats before settling on a final result of 1:43.21 to get under the 1:44 barrier for the first time ever.
The previous NZL record rested at the 1:43.68 Matthew Stanley locked in during the 2017 World Cup.
Clareburt’s resume continues to grow in terms of his list of national records. The Olympian now owns the following individual marks:
