BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The University of Denver men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs recorded their first sweep of the season, taking both sides of the 2024 Roadrunner Invite on Saturday inside the John S. Hillman Memorial Aquatic Center.
Ines Marin won two freestyle individual events to highlight the women’s win in a seven-team field, while the Denver men showed off their scoring depth to take the team title.

Event-by-Event Recap
Denver opened the meet with a second place finish in the women’s 400 medley relay. Ali Beay, Jessica Maeda, Ines Marin and Kali Metuzals combined for a time of 3:49.81 to earn second-place points.
The Pioneer men also finished second when the quartet of Dylan Wright, Nico Morton, Hamish McLellan and Matija Pantic combined for a time of 3:22.54.
Marin picked up Denver’s first event win of the day, winning the 200 free by more than a second with her time of 1:51.54. Metuzals finished third in 1:53.17 and Izzy Burton took fourth in 1:53.96.
Maeda took third in the women’s 200 breast to score more important points for the Pioneer women. She turned in a time of 2:20.05 to lead three-straight Pioneers to the final wall that also included Peyton Mullowney taking fourth in 2:21.21 and Zoe Lynch grabbing fifth-place points in 2:22.34.
Mia Moulden earned a podium finish in the women’s 200 fly, taking second in 2:02.04.
Wright and Brandon Chapman grabbed a 2-3 finish in the men’s 200 fly, clocking in at times of 1:51.80 and 1:51.96, respectively.
Lilly Zippel and Sabrina Rachjaibun got Denver a 1-2 finish in the women’s 400IM with times of 4:26.83 and 4:29.96. Mina Ada Solaker finished fourth in 4:33.30
Morton earned a podium space in the 400IM for the Denver men with a third-place time of 4:03.10. Ian O’Neil finished fifth (4:12.20) and Marco Nosack took sixth (4:12.78).
Marin grabbed her second freestyle win of the afternoon in the 100, out-swimming the field with a 51.83. Metuzals finished fourth in 52.44.
Denver’s women grabbed three of the top five spots in the women’s 200 back. Darian Koler took second in 2:02.85, Zippel finished fourth in 2:05.27 and Izzy Burton reached the wall fifth in 2:06.09.
Wright got his second, second-place finish of the afternoon, this time finishing the 200 back in 1:48.12 to grab a good share of points. Quinn Collins took fifth in 1:52.70 and Mason Bruhn finished sixth in 1:54.38.
The Pioneer women earned three of the top six spots in the 500 free. Rachjaibun led the Pioneer distance swimmers with a second-place finish in 5:04.30. Daniela Alfaro finished fifth in 5:07.27 and Paige Reilly rounded out the trio in sixth with a 5:07.27.
A trio of Denver men in the top four earned the Pioneers important points in the men’s 500 free. Finn Holdredge took second in 4:34.83, Dylan Mes finished third in 4:37.18 and Kieran Watson swam to fourth in 4:38.24.
Denver’s men rounded out the meet and clinched the victory with a second-place finish in the men’s 400 free relay. Frank Tirone, Luke Milburn, McLellan and Pantic swam a time of 3:02.90 in the final event of a busy weekend in Bakersfield.
In Saturday’s diving action, Savanna Berry finished third with a score of 227.95, followed by Kaitlin Calvery’s 1-meter score of 222.10.
On the men’s side, Zyad Morsy earned his second 3-meter zone cut in as many weeks with a 342.80 to lead the field in Bakersfield. Colin Breuer finished third with a 270.0 and Nathan Cox finished fourth with a score of 265.30.
