STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific swimming program welcomes Angel Alcala as an assistant coach ahead of the 2024-25 season, as announced by sixth-year head coach Katelyne Herrington.

“Angel is going to be a huge addition to our coaching staff this year,” Herrington said. “He is a well-respectable alum from Pacific, holding three current individual team records in the 200 Butterfly and 100 & 200 Backstroke events, as well as two relays team records in the 200 & 400 Medley Relays. He’ll bring his prior experiences as a swimmer of Pacific as well as his coaching experience he’s had at Tiger Aquatics, helping to elevate our program.”

Alcala is more than ready to return to his roots at Pacific where he can pass on his knowledge to the current swim team.

“I’m extremely excited for the opportunity to return to Pacific,” Alcala said. “Pacific holds a special place in my heart because it helped me grow as a student, athlete, and person.  I’m looking forward to helping the next generation of Pacific swimmers in their journey and I can’t wait to share the valuable lessons I learned while helping them achieve their academic and athletic goals. I also want to thank Coach Katelyne, my former coach, for the opportunity and I can’t wait to get started!”

Alcala swam for four years as a Tiger, committing 20 hours a week to practice, weight training, while maintaining full course load as a student-athlete.

For the last two years, Alcala has been a swim instructor with Tiger Aquatics in Stockton, California where he guides swimmers with race strategy, mental preparation and race feedback. Alcala helped instill the knowledge of six core values from the program – passion, responsibility, discipline, community, citizenship, and integrity – and continues to bring that mindset to the pool.

Alcala has taught swimmers the fundamentals of all four strokes, breakouts in all four strokes and the starts of swimming.

Originally from Los Angeles, Alcala earned a degree in Psychology at Pacific in May 2020.

Alcala joins the coaching staff of Herrington, assistant coach Nate LeRoy and assistant coach Tim Buisson.
