Are you listening USA Swimming..??

Do NOT put Trials within even 3 months of the Olympics if you want to give athletes the best chance at medals. I know there are stats out there that say it’s the same either way, but this experience and a few others seem to demonstrate that athletes at Trials and Olympics need a lot of time to wind down and wind back up again. Yes, it’s possible that we could miss an athlete or two that are breaking into the scene, but it’s likely that they won’t be medalists, which is what we are chasing most of all.

Carson refers to 2 Olympics within a month due to trials being a 9 day meet. His comments inadvertently seem to confirm my own theory that trials was too much of a spectacle and too close to OLYs. Many swimmers particularly on the men’s side couldn’t peak again for OLYs and swam slower. Carson also seemed to confirm that environmental factors in Paris like conditions in the OLY village, food or buses might have had less to do with it. I know trials is USA swimming’s baby, but I think if they really want to improve OLY performance and medal count, it needs to be rethought. If we had a ranking system and picked the top 2 or 6 fastest… Read more »

Carson looks like he still a freshman! Not a bad thing! Glad he gets so excited about seeing his club coach cheering him on.

Missed an important question:
Quintin Ewers or Arch Manning?

Slightly unrelated, but does anyone if Shaine has decided to join Bowman at Texas?

I saw a video from after the Trials but before the games, where he said he was excited to get to work with a new coach, but since then I haven’t seen anything showing Casas has been in the water and the staff has posted several clips showing practice and don’t think I’ve seen Shaine anywhere.

Actually, looking back at it now, Bowman posted a short clip less than a day ago and Shaine’s clearly in the water

This IM training group is astounding. How many elite male and female IMers* (*or, perhaps more accurately, elite swimmers who are competitive in IM races) are part of this training group now** (Marchand, Foster, Casas, R.Smith, etc.)?

(**Or, in Marchand’s case, as of January 2025)

Marchand: World/Olympic champion in 200/400IM, World (400IM) and European record (200IM) holder
Foster: World Championship silver medalist (200/400IM), Olympic bronze medalist (400IM)
Casas: World Championship and Olympic finalst in the 200IM, with a 1:55 low PB
Smith: 2:08 PB in the 200IM, even though it’s an off event for her
Kos: World Championship finalist, European Champion, WJR holder in the 200IM

off the top of my head, and these are the best of the best on the team.

Coleman Hodges

Coleman started his journey in the water at age 1, and although he actually has no memory of that, something must have stuck. A Missouri native, he joined the Columbia Swim Club at age 9, where he is still remembered for his stylish dragon swim trunks. After giving up on …
