Santos Sets 50 Butterfly Record At Brazilian National Championships

The Brazilian National Championships opened today in Porto Alegre with 44 clubs and 270 swimmers attending the event which will run until Saturday December 21st. The Long course meet has two categories; the Senior Championships, which is a competition for the Daltely Guimaraes Trophy and the Open Championships.

The race for the Daltely Guimaraes Trophy involves athletes that are 20 years and older and is run during the morning session. The evening session is the Open competition where the top eight from the morning no matter what age compete for the championships.

The competition is a qualification meet for the South American Championships and is one of three qualification meets for the Pan Pacific Championships. The other two include the BHP Billiton Super Series in late January and the Maria Lenk Festival in April.

The morning’s events saw four athletes put up winning times that were faster than the Pan Pacific standards:

  • Women’s 50 butterfly – Daynara de Paula – 26.67
  • Men’s 50 butterfly – Nicholas Santos – 23.43
  • Women’s 50 breaststroke – Beatriz Travalon – 31.98
  • Men’s 50 breaststroke – Felipe Franca da Silva – 27.44

A new championship record was also set in the Women’s 4 x 100 freestyle with the SESI-SP A team winning the event in a time of 3:46.18.

Daltely Guimaraes Trophy Team Scores:

  1. Pinheiros – 80 pts
  2. Minas – 71 pts
  3. Corinthians – 47 pts

The Open Tournament in the evening once again saw the winners of the 50 meter events record Pan Pacific qualifying standards:

  • Women’s 50 butterfly – Daynara de Paula – 26.57
  • Men’s 50 butterfly – Nicholas Santos – 22.95
  • Women’s 50 breaststroke – Carolina Bergamaschi – 31.83
  • Men’s 50 breaststroke – Felipe Franca da Silva – 27.03

Santos who won the men’s 50 butterfly by over a second also broke the championship record in the event beating his own mark of 23.10 which he posted last year. Etiene Medeiros also broke a championship record in the women’s 100 backstroke winning the event in a time of 1:01.40 breaking Fabiola Pulga Molina‘s 2007 record of 1:01.75.

Other event winners are as follows:

Senior

  • Women’s 100 backstroke – Etiene Medeiros – 1:02.27
  • Men’s 100 backstroke – Fernando Ernesto dos Santos – 54.68

  • Men’s 1500 freestyle – Lucas Kanieski – 15:28.35
  • Men’s 4 x 100 freestyle relay – Minas A – 3:17.57

Open

To close the debate about Chalmers’ 48.63, here are the results of the meet from September you talk about.
http://www.schoolsport.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Swimming-2013.pdf
Kyle Chalmers has won the 50 free in 23.58, the 100 free in 51.53 and the 200 free in 1.53.58. So, I believe we can officially say that the 48.63 are a giant error.
Seriously, do you not believe it would have made the big headlines in the world of swimming if a 15-year-old kid would have swum 48.63 in the 100 free?
His new record is from today and it’s 50.56!

That would break Thorpe 50.01 (or 50.05 dunno) 15 year record.. which would be stunning..

50.21 officially.

But if I’m not mistaken Thorpe also relay-split either 48 high or 49 low in 1998 commonwealth games where he was still 15.

Anyway, Chalmers still has 7 months to break Thorpe’s record.

I wish Michael Andrew swims LCM so we can compare times between these two outstanding young swimmers.

Correction. If he had swum.

Kyle Chalmers will probably go under 50 next April.
And about young US sprinters, you should rather look at 15-year-old Ryan Hoffer. 43.13 in the 100 free in SCY last weekend. He looks more promising than Michael Andrew on freestyle. But he still has to confirm in long course.

So, if we are allowed to talk about Australian swimming on the Brazilian page, why not about French swimming?
I’ve found 2 videos of the Yannick Agnel’s great performances from the last weekend in Baltimore.
500 free final in 4.10.

I’m sure that Rafael or DDias will be happy to see we talk about Australian swimming on the Brazilian page. 🙂

Not a problem at all..

Not anything really interesting going on,, except that santos did that time with a very bad start this time.. he had the Worst RT.. and his coach said him to swim with tech, not using his physical power so he want him to keep that speed on the 100m fly.. if he.. who is not a new guy, become world class on 100 fly.. it will be something quite rare..

I know this is unrelated but didn’t know where to put it, just looking over south australia swimming champs and kyle charmers has a seed for 100m free of 48.63! Is this right? The results site says it was a lead off swim, but if so that’s crazy quick

IIRC, that is his SCM time

That’s also what I thought, but the results site says he did it LC in a relay lead off

It must be a big error. It’s impossible. He has a 50.86 record in long course. And in short course he has a 49.45 record.
He has swum 52.86 in the 100 free prelims at these South Australian championships. Final to come.
Live results here.

Yes I also thought an error maybe, too bad the school sport results don’t show splits though because then well never know.
Yeah Victorian champs have been on too, very fast times by a few swimmers, mack horton from 100-1500 swam very well

He has won the final in 50.56. A new PB for him. But forget the crazy 48.63.

Yeah saw that, very good swim. Mack horton swam 50.3 which was a small pb and also went 15:13 at vic champs

It could be an error. But here’s the results from that school sports meet relay in September:

http://www.myswimresults.com.au/ResultsRelay.aspx?MeetID=6605&Distance=100&stroke=FS&Gender=M&EventMinAge=10&EventMaxAge=19&RelayMembers=4

However, some of the times look dodgy, so yes it could be an error.

the 48.63 is listed here though (which could be an automatic error as well):
