Fordham Rolls To Fifth Sweep of Season With Victories Over Bryant

Bronx, N.Y. – (November 11, 2023) – Already off to an incredible start to the season, the Fordham swimming & diving team improved to 5-0 in dual meet action, as the Rams swept Bryant at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center on Saturday.

The Fordham men earned a 185-113 win over the Bulldogs, while the women rolled to a 193-105 win.

On the men’s side, Fordham posted four season-best times, led by graduate student Guy Gropper.  Gropper won the 50 freestyle in a season-best time of 20.65 seconds, while doing the same in the 100 butterfly in 49.63 seconds.  Gropper was also a part of the 200 freestyle relay with Christian TaylorNoah Althoff, and Alex Wilhelm, which posted a winning and season-best time of 1:23.76.

Taylor also won two events on the day, registering the top time in the 100 backstroke (season-best – 49.83) and 200 backstroke (1:52.99).  He also led off the winning 200 medley relay with Kevin ZaharievVitalis Onu, and Alexander Shah, which clocked in at 1:31.93.

Other winners were led by Daniel Langlois, who grabbed first in both the 100 breaststroke (58.36) and the 400 individual medley (4:12.68).  Additional event wins came from Wojciech Dutkowiak in the 200 freestyle (1:43.31), Onu in the 100 freestyle (47.26), and Althoff in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.55).

For the women, Emma ShaughnessyManon Compagner, and Jane Brown each had two individual events wins and a relay win.  The trio of swimmers started with a win in the 200 medley relay with Jessica Zebrowski, posting a season-best time of 1:43.80.

Shaughnessy then won both breaststroke events with a season-best time of 1:03.49 in the 100 and a time of 2:19.43 in the 200.  Brown grabbed the top spot in both backstroke events, clocking in at 56.97 (100) and 2:06.10 (200).  Compagner won the 100 freestyle in 52.03 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 56.65 seconds.

Fordham had a final dual event winner in Mya Bokerman, who captured first in both diving events with scores of 246.38 (1M) and 269.40 (3M).

Other event winners were Emilie Krog in the 200 freestyle (1:55.39), Zebrowski in the 50 freestyle (24.19), Leire Martin in the 400 individual medley (4:26.56), and the 200 freestyle relay team of Compagner, Zoei HowardHope Nolan, and Zebrowski (1:37.52 – season-best).

The Rams will next be in action at the Bucknell Invitational, December 1-3.

NEW YORK – The Bryant University women’s swimming and diving team took their first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon against Fordham by a score of 193-105.

Makayla Pearce swept the distance freestyle events, picking up two wins for the Bulldogs.

Notes and Notables

  • Makayla Pearce grabbed Bryant’s first win of the day with a 1000 yard freestyle time of 10:42.57. Natalia Kuipers was right behind Pearce in the event and was able to take second place with a time of 10:46.30.
  • Pearce also won the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:15.28. Charlee LeGallais backed her up with a second place time of 5:18.91.
  • Julia Stenhard and Ava Mustacciuolo combined for the team’s third 1-2 finish of the day. Stenhard swam a 2:09.72 while Mustacciuolo laid down a 2:12.96 in the 200 yard butterfly. Stenhard’s win was her third straight victory in the event.
  • The Bulldogs also picked up the top three spots in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The A Team raced a 1:41.16, the B team put down a 1:44.38, and the C team swam a 1:47.48

Next Up

The Black and Gold swimming squad will have a few weeks off until they travel to WPI to open the month of December (1-3rd). Diving however will make their way to the Terrier Invitational at Boston University next week (Nov. 17-19th).

Leo Luna took both distance freestyle events while Christopher Buonocore continued his dominance on the boards.

Notes and Notables

  • Leo Luna swam away with the win in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 9:36.64. He beat the second place finisher by nearly 35 seconds.
  • Luna also won the 500 yard freestyle in which he raced a 4:39.35. This time he beat the second place finisher by almost 10 seconds.
  • Andrew Gamper took first place in the 200 yard fly with his time of 1:55.84.
  • Christopher Buonocore and Will Arnold had 1-2 finishes in both the 1 meter and 3 meter dives. Buonocore came in first in the 1m with a score of 239.85 while Arnold scored a 222.53. In the 3 meter, Buonocore laid down a 292.58 and Arnold dove to a 235.95.

Next Up

Bryant diving will be back in the pool next weekend at the Terrier Invitational at Boston University (Nov. 17-19th). The swimming team will have a few weeks off though as they don’t compete again until they travel to WPI (Dec. 1-3rd).
