Cincinnati Women Storm Past WVU, Mountaineer Men Triumph Over Bearcats

DAY 1 RECAP

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati recorded 11 event wins at the end of day one of the West Virginia dual.

Divers junior Will Claus (329.18) and sophomore Preston Landolt (289.35) began the weekend with first and third finishes in the 1-meter dive, respectively.

The Bearcat relays started off hot with victories in both the men’s and women’s 400-yard medley relays.

The team of Grace GavinJoleigh CryeSonja Aarsvold and Kaylee Nagel took the women’s with a time of 3:44.02. On the men’s side, it was the team of Hunter GubenoBrogan RobinsonTommy Eaton and Jon Osa that claimed the top spot, recording a time of 3:17.96.

Sophomore Joleigh Crye had a strong performance in the 100-yard breaststroke recording a time of 1:01.29.

Eaton (49.13) and senior Drew Hawthorne (49.14) claimed top-two finishes in the 100-yard butterfly notching times just 0.01 apart.

Cincinnati will resume competition tomorrow morning with the dive portion beginning at 10 a.m. and swimming at 11 a.m.

DAY 2 RECAP

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving program earned eight event wins Saturday morning to close out the weekend dual.

The women’s team claimed a big-time 241-112 victory, while the men fell short to the Mountaineers, 191-162.

Cincinnati started the morning off with a second-place finish in the 1-meter dive with sophomore Lauren Melia notching a score of 249.60.

The team of Grace GavinJoleigh CryeSonja Aarsvold and Jessica Davis was a dominate force all weekend, notching a new pool record in the 200-yard medley relay (1:40.98). The previous record was set in 2017 by San Jose State.

On the men’s side, Drew HawthorneHunter GubenoJet Fuhrmann and Jon Osa finished second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 2:59.43.

Davis continues to shine earning two first-place wins in the 50-yard (23.36) and 100-yard freestyle (51.10). Gavin secured a win in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:03.24. She also finished second in the 200-yard individual medley recording a time of 2:05.89.

Senior Tommy Eaton found success in the 200-yard butterfly earning a first-place finish with a time of 1:49.36.

To finish off the meet, Gubeno had a strong performance in the 200-yard backstroke recording a time of 1:46.86, which claimed him the win. He also finished second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:50.35.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.  The West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams split a dual meet against Cincinnati on Saturday at the Keating Aquatics Center in Cincinnati.

The men’s team (1-1, 1-0 Big 12) followed up a strong showing on Friday night with an even better performance on Saturday, defeating Cincinnati, 191-162. The women’s team (0-2, 0-1 Big 12) fell to Cincinnati, 241-112.

“It was a very good meet,” head coach Vic Riggs said. “The team responded well after Friday and our divers got us going today. Our goal is to get better every meet and we did that on the road against a good team. Now we will get ready for our invitational.”

Overall, the men’s swimming team won six events with senior Danny Berlitz leading the way once again. Berlitz won two events on Saturday, including the 200-yard individual medley (1:48.39) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:02.01).

Junior Conner McBeth followed up his victory in the 50-yard freestyle event on Friday night as he set a record at the Keating Aquatics Center, winning the 100-yard freestyle (44.39) event.

Senior William Mullen had the other individual victory for the men’s team as he won the 1000-yard freestyle event (9:23.87).

The Mountaineers also won the 200-yard medley relay (1:29.76) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (2:58.62). The relay team comprised of Berlitz, McBeth, sophomore Max Nielsen and senior Roanoke Shirk set a pool record at the Keating Aquatics Center in the 400-yard freestyle relay event.

West Virginia found success in the diving well as junior Glenn Eloriaga won the men’s 3-meter springboard (311.10). Freshman Owen Recker finished in second with a final score of 302.63.

For the women’s team, junior Mia Walters earned her second victory of the weekend in the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.17). Sophomore Mia Cheatwood also won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.09) event.

In the diving well, junior Sarah Krusinski continued her dominance, winning the 1-meter women’s springboard (253.20).

West Virginia returns to the pool when it hosts the WVU Invitational on Nov. 15-18, at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown.
